This elevated walkway runs through a building and across roads and railways to connect three previously disconnected zones of Rotterdam. Resulting from a competition held in 2011, the project of the Dutch firm Zones Urbaines Sensibles (ZUS), headed by Elma van Boxel and Kristian Koreman, recently opened with the objective of developing an attractive public space capable of reactivating the area. Painted yellow and stretching 390 meters, the wooden structure was raised thanks to a crowdfunding campaign that drew in 8,000 people. For every 25 euros donated, a name appears on one of the boards cladding the footbridge, whose segments converge in a circular observation deck with seats built in. The project also involved the Pompenburg children’s playground, with its sport facilities; a venue for public events on the roof of the old Hofplein station; and Dakakker, an urban vegetable garden on the roof of a nearby building.
