Elevated on a public square, the museum has a dual organization: the main pavilion contains the coach collection and the adjacent volume accommodates offices, a restaurant and an auditorium. In terms of how it is inserted in the city, the building establishes an aerial connection that starts at the banks of the Tagus River, where the parking is located, crossing the railway line as well as Brasilia and Índia avenues. This walkway ends beneath the structural frame of the annex building, welcoming visitors into the open lobby of the auditorium, establishing in this way a complex boundary between public and private spaces.

Steven Holl has won the competition to build the Culture and Art Center of Qingdao, a city on Shandong Peninsula in eastern China. The New York-based architect’s design carried the day over those submitted by the other invited teams, including OMA and Zaha Hadid. Within plans to expand Qingdao, the ambitious program for cultural facilities on an 18-hectare site contemplates four museums: the Classic Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum, the Public Arts Museum, and the Performing Arts and Cinema Museum. Holl’s proposal takes inspiration from the shape of the nearby bridge over Jiaozhou Bay. Surrounded by garden zones and ponds, a winding tunnel serves as a connector for the complex – which is organized in the manner of islands –, by joining three sculpted cubes, while the fourth museum is placed at the heart of the premises.

With a staggered facade 126 meters long, David Chipperfield has given the prestigious HEC School of Management in Paris a new gateway building. Located in the Jouy-en-Josa campus in the Versailles district, 16 kilometers from the center of the capital, the 9,500-square-meter building set to house the institution’s MBA program sets back its modules from the line of the facade in order to give it a sense of motion and create recess spaces in the manner of fragmented courtyards. Winner of a competition held in 2008, the project distributes the classrooms and auditorium around a large foyer, which crosses one of the main arteries of the university complex and connects with the rest of its facilities.

This elevated walkway runs through a building and across roads and railways to connect three previously disconnected zones of Rotterdam. Resulting from a competition held in 2011, the project of the Dutch firm Zones Urbaines Sensibles (ZUS), headed by Elma van Boxel and Kristian Koreman, recently opened with the objective of developing an attractive public space capable of reactivating the area. Painted yellow and stretching 390 meters, the wooden structure was raised thanks to a crowdfunding campaign that drew in 8,000 people. For every 25 euros donated, a name appears on one of the boards cladding the footbridge, whose segments converge in a circular observation deck with seats built in. The project also involved the Pompenburg children’s playground, with its sport facilities; a venue for public events on the roof of the old Hofplein station; and Dakakker, an urban vegetable garden on the roof of a nearby building.
