Laboratory measurements on continental crustal rocks indicate that the critical temperature marking the transition to stable-sliding is about 350°C (e.g., references listed by Hyndman and Wang, 1993). This temperature corresponds well with that estimated for the maximum depth of earthquakes in many continental areas, including the crustal earthquakes landward of the Cascadia subduction zone. The maximum depth is greatest in low heat flow cool areas where the temperature increases slowly with depth. It should be noted, however, that the maximum temperature for earthquakes below the crust in mantle rocks is much higher, i.e., 750-800°C ( Figure 4 ). Great earthquakes that are initiated where the temperature is less than 350°C may rupture downdip to where the temperature reaches about 450°C. The 350 to 450°C region thus corresponds to the transition zone used to model the geodetic data.

The Call is widely posted and is kept open for at least 120 days to allow all interested parties to evaluate the potential of the parcel. The Call for Bids will clearly outline all the obligations including the bid criterion (generally Exploration Licenses), and any conditions such as those regulating the environment, to well commitments or length of term. The regulator announces the wining bid shortly after the closing date. Information on other bidders is kept confidential. This process is fair and allows the bidders to understand exactly what their commitments will be if the win the Bid.

By their nature, recreational fisheries are highly adaptable with respect to harvest levels, gear used and location of fishing. Thus, sport fisheries will likely be readily able to accommodate the impacts of climate change, the possible exception being where there is widespread loss of a species over a large area, in which case reprofiling such fisheries to 'new' species might be possible.

The former Beacon gold mine is an underground hard rock facility providing an industrial scale facility for underground testing and evaluation without disrupting production. With over 2,500 metres of drifts, raises, secondary openings, a shrinkage stope, an access ramp and five underground levels, the Experimental Mine offers a range of testing opportunities and services to the mining industry and equipment manufacturers.

When break up of the land fast ice (sea ice along the coast) is early, the lactation period for seal pups at the edge of the breeding habitat may be interrupted. Mother-pup pairs depend on the stable ice for their lairs, for a successful (typically 6 week) nursing period. In 1998, break-up of the sea ice was approximately 3 weeks early in the Beaufort Sea region, and this probably led to an abrupt end of the nursing period. However only those pups that were unfortunate enough to be at the edge of the breeding habitat would have been affected by this event. Wasted, skinny and stunted seal pups were found, by scientists and seal hunters. By examining the stomach contents of these pups, it was found that they had been attempting to feed themselves (invertebrates and Arctic cod), but at an earlier stage than usual. It is not known if these unweaned pups would have survived or not, nor do we know the long-term consequences of the early break up of the sea ice on the seal population. The range of conditions of seal pups in 1998 is shown below.

The axis that the earth rotates around is tilted relative to the sun at an angle of 23.5 degrees. If there was no tilt, there'd be no seasonal changes here in Canada. We'd pretty much have the same season all year. The equatorial country's would be really hot and the polar regions would remain cold, having no chance to 'face' the sun. Because of the gravitational force of the sun and the moon, the orientation of this tilted spin axis changes in space. Precession is the slow motion that causes the axis to sweep out a 'cone' every 25,600 years. Nutation are tiny irregularities in this motion (the largest lasts a mere 18.6 years) that halt it's forward progress sending the orientation back a bit before advancing again.
