Foscolo fu tra i numerosi esuli italiani che trovarono rifugio in Svizzera e, in parte, a Lugano, a causa dell'oppressione austriaca a Milano. Egli venne accolto a Lugano il primo aprile del 1815 dal Consigliere municipale Pietro Gujoni.
While Milan was being oppressed by the Austrians, Foscolo was one of the many exiled Italian patriots who took refuge in Switzerland and also in Lugano for a certain period of time. He was welcomed to Lugano on April 1st 1815 by Pietro Gujoni, member of the Municipal Government.

Il "conventino" è un edificio di prestigio che risale al '700, situato nel cuore del paese con un'apprezzabile corte interna che oggi è di proprietà della famiglia Egli. Nato l'11 novembre 1868, solo quattordicenne, il gandriese Domenico Giambonini vince, in Italia, la sua prima medaglia nel tiro. In tutta la sua vita ottiene oltre 600 distinzioni; egli è, infatti, tra i più grandi tiratori che il Ticino abbia mai avuto.
Born on November 11th 1868, when only fourteen years old, Domenico Giambonini from Gandria won his first sport shooting medal in Italy. In the course of his lifetime, he was to win 600 awards; in fact, he is among the greatest sport shooters Ticino has ever known. Although he was a real champion, Giambonini kept practicing sport shooting as a passion and hobby and continued his normal working activity. At 81, he was awarded a special acknowledgement for having participated in a federal country competition obtaining as many as 80 points. He died in Bellinzona on August 8, 1956.
