In questo senso Gorjestani ha lavorato come direttore dei programmi dell’Indigenous Knowledge for Development, basati sul concetto di IK, ossia la conoscenza locale, unica per ogni cultura o società, che egli considera come l’elemento base per prendere decisioni a livello comunitario in settori come la sicurezza alimentare, l’educazione, la gestione delle risorse naturali e altre vitali attività economiche e sociali.

He was one of the pioneers of knowledge sharing, learning and innovation at the World Bank, having designed and managed several cutting edge and award winning programs and approaches to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the way to do business in development. Gorjestani was also Program Director of the World Bank’s Indigenous Knowledge for Development Program where IK is defined as the basis for community-level decision making in areas pertaining to food, security, education, natural resource management and other vital economic and social activities.
