In the second collection of S.Nėris's poetry, "The Footprints in the Sand", one can already spot the verses that assert the oncoming spiritual crisis. In the same year the verses containing revolutionary motives were published in the procommunist literary journal "Trečias frontas" (The Third Front). There was also published her promise to work for bolsheviks, only it was written not by S.Nėris herself.

A. Strazdas ne visada laikydavosi dvasininkų luomo nuostatų, dėl to katalikų bažnyčios vyresnybės buvo nemėgstamas ir visaip persekiojamas. 1818m. Lietuvos evangelikų reformatų sinodas apskundė A. Strazdą konsistorijai už eilėraštį "Pagrabas Palšio", įdėtą į jo rinkinį. Poetas buvo priverstas aiškintis.

From 1790 he was a priest in different parishes of Eastern Highlands. A.Strazdas was not always following strict canons of priests' estate and the authorities of the Catholic church did not like him and persecuted. In 1818 the Synod of Lithuanian Evangelists Reformats had complained about his poem "A Funeral of Palšis" (Palšis is a name of a horse). The poet had to plead. In 1819 he had written an explanation which is the only authentic document in which he talked about his calling and the role of literature in life with inspiration.

Antanas Miškinis was born on January 29, 1905, in the village of Juknėnai, Utena district. In 1914 he entered Daugavpils Realgymnasium, but had to cancel his studies because of war. In 1921 A.Miškinis entered Zarasai progymnasium and finished it in 1922. In 1923-1926 A.Miškinis studied at Kaunas "Aušra" (The Sunrise) gymnasium, and entered Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University, the Faculty of Humanitarian Sciences. To write poetry he began in gymnasium, and the first verse was published in 1925 in a periodical "LIetuvis" (The Lithuanian). After graduating from studies in University in 1931, A.Miškinis was appointed to serve his military duties. In 1935 he had got a diploma of graduating from University, and began to teach Lithuanian language and literature at the 5th Gymnasium of Kaunas. At the same time he was an editor at the State radio. He was an activist in The Society of Lithuanian Writers, read his poetry at the literary evenings, cooperated in the periodical "Literatūros naujienos" (The News of Literature) and in other cultural newspapers and magazines, also published the books of his verses.

Vytautas Mačernis was born on June 5, 1921, in Šarnelė, near Žemaičių Kalvarija. He went to Seda progymnasium, later to Telšiai gymnasium, which he had finished in 1939. In autumn of the same year he entered the Theology and Philosophy Faculty of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, where studied English language and literature. In 1940 he moved to the Faculty of Humanitarian Sciences of Vilnius University. In 1941 he dropped English studies and began philosophy studies, which he continued until the closure of University in 1943. After the closure of University by Germans V.Mačernis returned to his native land and lived there until 1944. While being there, V.Mačernis wrote verses and sent them in letters to his friends. The verses were copied down by others, since by that time the works of V.Mačernis became popular among high school and University students and young intellectuals. In this way his poetry by manuscripts and copies became popular in Lithuania even before the death of a poet. When Bolshevik armies were forthcoming, V.Mačernis decided to retreat to the West, and perished near Žemaičių Kalvarija on October 7, 1944. He is buried in Šarnelė.

In 1919-1927 J.Aistis studied at Kaunas "Aušra" (The Sunrise) gymnasium. There he began to write his poetry. The first verse was published in 1927 in a magazine "Ateitis" (The Future). J.Aistis studied literature at Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University, in the Faculty of Humanitarian Sciences. During his studies he worked at the Bank of Agriculture. After receiving the grant of Ministry of Education, in 1936-1940 J.Aistis continued his studies at Grenoble University in France. After maintaining a thesis, in 1944 he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree. Since because of war and occupations he could not return to Lithuania, in 1944-1946 he worked in the Archives of Nice and in the library at Paris. In 1946 J.Aistis with his family moved to live in the USA. Until 1952 he taught Lithuanian language and literature at Marianapolis college. In 1952-1958 J.Aistis worked at the Free Europe Lithuanian Department in New York, since 1958 lived in Washington, where worked in the Library of Congress. J.Aistis died on June 13, 1973, in Washington.

Jonas Mačiulis (officially Maciulevičius) was born in 1862 in Pasandravis manor, Šiluva community, Raseiniai district. His parents were free peasants and had close relationship with Polonised gentry. The foundations of education J.Mačiulis had received from his father and Betygala school that he attended for six months. In 1873 J.Mačiulis had entered the preparatory class of Kaunas Gymnasium. In the sixth year he had started writing poetry in Polish. In 1883 he entered Kiev University to study literature. Respecting the wish of his parents after a year, in 1884 he entered the clerical seminary in Kaunas. After graduating the seminary, he continued his education in the Imperial Roman Catholic Spiritual Academy in St. Petersburg in 1888-1892. In 1891 J.Mačiulis was awarded the degree of a candidate of theology and was initiated to priesthood. At that time he had used his pseudonym Maironis for the first time. In 1892 he was awarded the a degree of a Master of Theology. In 1894-1909 he was a professor in the Clerical Academy of St. Petersburg. These years were the best and most creative for J.Mačiulis. He had written his best works at that time. In 1903 he was awarded a doctoral degree in Theology.

A.Vaičiulaitis was born on June 23, 1906 in the village of Didieji Šelviai near Vilkaviškis. He attended the primary school at Vilkaviškis. In the years 1919-1927 he studied at Vilkaviškis "Žiburys" gymnasium. In 1925 in the magazine "Krivulė" A.Vaičiulaitis published his first verses. In 1927 he entered Lithuanian University in Kaunas where studied Lithuanian and French languages and literature. After graduation from University, for a short period he was a teacher at Kaunas Jesuit gymnasium. In 1935-1938 he continued post-graduate studies at Grenoble University and Sorbonne. After coming back to Kaunas, in 1938-1940 A.Vaičiulaitis worked at the Lithuanian news agency Elta and lectured modern Lithuanian literature at University, in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, at the same time he expanded his knowledge by frequent travels to the countries of Europe. In 1940 A.Vaičiulaitis joined Lithuanian diplomatic service and began to work at the Lithuanian embassy in Rome. After some time he had to emigrate to the United States of America. In 1941-1945 he taught Lithuanian at the college of Marianapolis. In 1943 he joined the US Armed Forces, but soon for the reasons of health was transferred to the reserve. In 1945-1947 he was an editor of "Amerika" magazine; in 1947-1951 lectured French language at Scranton University. In 1951 A.Vaičiulaitis joined the United States Information Agency where he began to work at the Lithuanian Department of "The Voice of America", and moved to Washington.

This article was the first study of K. Donelaitis life, personality, and creative work. It was a foundation to the later studies of Donelaitis works. The main problems related to Donelaitis were outlined and briefly discussed in the article. L.Rėza had compared the work by Donelaitis with a wide literary context (antique and modern writers) and emphasized the originality of "The Seasons". He had described it as an immortal monument to Lithuanian language, custom, spiritual culture and way of life, that was equal to classic literary works of other nations (Slavic, Germanic, Celtic). "The Seasons" had a great importance to Lithuanians - it had become a fundament to all original Lithuanian literature. L.Rėza had described K. Donelaitis as a genius of the nation, the first Lithuanian poet who aspired to reach "the kingdom of truth and beauty" on the "wings of the genius". L.Rėza had disclosed the closeness to the people and simplicity of "The Seasons"; discussed the genre, composition, metrics of the work and art of translation; revealed the unusual richness of the poetic language of Donelaitis. L.Rėza met people who had known K. Donelaitis personally and gathered important facts about the life of Donelaitis, noble features of his personality, diversity of his talents, and evidence of his artistic gift.

Ji buvo paskirta vadinamojo Liaudies Seimo atstove, taip pat buvo išrinkta į delegaciją vykti į Sovietų Sąjungos Aukščiausiąją tarybą prašyti, kad okupuota Lietuva būtų priimta į Sovietų Sąjungos sudėtį. Jai buvo pavesta parašyti poemą Stalino garbei. Poetė tokią poemą parašė. Be to, ji rašė ir daugiau eilėraščių partinėmis temomis. Ligi šiol yra daug įvairių nuomonių apie jos visišką ištikimumą.

The occupation of 1940 meant the tragic culmination of S.Nėris's life. She was appointed the member of the so called "People's Seimas" (Parliament), and also elected to participate at the delegation that went to the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union to appeal for adoption of occupied Lithuania into the Soviet Union. She was also assigned to write a poem glorifying Stalin. The poetess did write such a poem. She also wrote more verses on the themes dictated by the communist party. Until now there are many different opinions whether she was totally loyal.

Nors K.Donelaičio "Metai" parašyti anksčiau (XVIIIa. 7-ame dešimtmetyje), bet išspausdinti jie buvo Karaliaučiuje tiktai 1818 m.- taigi praėjus ketveriems metams po A. Strazdo rinkinio pasirodymo. A.Strazdo ,,Giesmės…" ir K.Donelaičio ,,Metai" - visos Lietuvių grožinės literatūros ištakos.

"The Songs, Worldly and Saint" by Antanas Strazdas, that were published in Vilnius in 1814, is the first selection of original Lithuanian poetry. It marks the beginning of Lithuanian secular poetry. Though "The Seasons" by K. Donelaitis were written earlier (in the 7th decade of the 18th century), they were published in Königsberg in 1818, i.e. four years after "The Songs..." by Strazdas. "The Songs..." by Strazdas and "The Seasons" by K. Donelaitis are at the sources of all Lithuanian fiction.

The book consists of: the dedication in Latin "To the Great Duchy of Lithuania", two prefaces: in Latin (in prose), and in Lithuanian (in verse), an ABC book; the catechism, and the book of songs. The rhymed preface in Lithuanian, "The Appeal of The Small Book Itself Unto Lithuanians and Samogitians", is the first authentic verse in Lithuanian. The initial letters of its lines from 3 to 19 downwards form the name of the author, Martinus Masvidius, thus confirming his authorship.

Pagrindinį savo kūrinį "Metus" K.Donelaitis rašė 1765 - 1775m. Pats K.Donelaitis savo kūrybos nespausdino. Pirmasis K.Donelaičio raštų leidėjas buvo L.Rėza ("Metus" jis paskelbė 1818, pasakėčias 1824). Rašė eilėraščius ir vokiečių kalba.

K.Donelaitis had started his literary work in 1740-1743. Six of his fables had reached our times and most probably they were written during this initial period of his creative activity. K.Donelaitis has worked on his main work "The Seasons" in 1765-1775. He had not published his works himself. The first publisher of the works by K.Donelaitis was L. Rėza (he had published "The Seasons" in 1818, the fables in 1824). K.Donelaitis had written poems in German as well.

A.Kalanavičius was born on June 5, 1945 in the village of Sapiegiškės near Nedzingė in the district of Varėna. He attended the secondary school at Nedzingė. In 1965-1968 he studied Lithuanian language and literature at Vilnius University and Vilnius Pedagogical Institute. He began his literary attempts in his teen ages, and his first verse was published in the district newspaper of Varėna. Since 1965 his poetry was published in various newspapers and journals. In 1967-1968 A.Kalanavičius tried to write songs.

A.Miškinio kūryboje yra 10 metų tarpas. Sibiro tremtyje poetas sukūrė vieną pačių stipriausių pasipriešinimo literatūros kūrinių - eilėraščių ciklą (paskelbta 1989m.). Grįžęs į Lietuvą, poetas galėjo rašyti tik optimistinius arba neutralius gamtinius eilėraščius, vertė įvairių autorių kūrinius į lietuvių kalbą, rašė atsiminimus.

In 1945-1948 A.Miškinis was an editor at the State Fiction Literature Publishing House, and joined the movement of the anti-Soviet resistance. In 1948 he was arrested, sentenced to death in absentia, and later was deported to Siberia. Only in 1956 he was allowed to come back to Lithuania. There is a ten-years break in works of A.Miškinis. During exile in Siberia a poet had created one of the most powerful works of Lithuanian resistance - a cycle of verses (published in 1989). After coming back to Lithuania the poet could write only the optimistic verses, or neutral verses about nature, or translate into Lithuanian works of various authors, and write memoirs as well.

For some time A.Mackus worked physical labour. He was associated with Lithuanian intellectuals in exile, vigorously participated in cultural activities. In 1950 was published the first modest selection of A.Mackus's verses "Elegies". In 1954 he began to cooperate at the literary radio broadcast "Pelkių Žiburėlis" (Will-o'-the-wisp), and later became its editor. In 1957-1958 A.Mackus studied Russian language and literature, as well as psychology, at Roosevelt University. In 1957 he began to work as announcer at "Margutis" (The Easter Egg) radio station, vigorously participated in activities of liberal academic organizations "Šviesa" (The Light), "Santara" (Concord). His main concern was to organize a foundation which would publish the books of most talented authors.

mokėsi Kauno "Aušros" gimnazijoje ir įstojo į Lietuvos universiteto Humanitarinių mokslų fakultetą. Rašyti eilėraščius A.Miškinis pradėjo dar gimnazijoje, o pirmasis eilėraštis išspausdintas 1925m. "Lietuvyje".

Antanas Miškinis was born on January 29, 1905, in the village of Juknėnai, Utena district. In 1914 he entered Daugavpils Realgymnasium, but had to cancel his studies because of war. In 1921 A.Miškinis entered Zarasai progymnasium and finished it in 1922. In 1923-1926 A.Miškinis studied at Kaunas "Aušra" (The Sunrise) gymnasium, and entered Kaunas Vytautas Magnus University, the Faculty of Humanitarian Sciences. To write poetry he began in gymnasium, and the first verse was published in 1925 in a periodical "LIetuvis" (The Lithuanian). After graduating from studies in University in 1931, A.Miškinis was appointed to serve his military duties. In 1935 he had got a diploma of graduating from University, and began to teach Lithuanian language and literature at the 5th Gymnasium of Kaunas. At the same time he was an editor at the State radio. He was an activist in The Society of Lithuanian Writers, read his poetry at the literary evenings, cooperated in the periodical "Literatūros naujienos" (The News of Literature) and in other cultural newspapers and magazines, also published the books of his verses.
