FiberSensing started with ten employees, of which 9 were former members of INESC TEC, but the company managed to increase its workforce to 40 employees in 10 years. At the time, the company was already working with dozens of clients from all over the world, exporting 98% of its production to the USA, China, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Singapore, Taiwan, Russia, Canada and Australia, with a turnover of 2.8M€.

O investigador do Laboratório de Inteligência Artificial e Apoio à Decisão (LIAAD) do INESC TEC, e professor catedrático da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, Alberto Adrego Pinto, acaba de editar, conjuntamente com David Zilberman, da Universidade de Berkeley, California, EUA, o terceiro volume da série “Modeling, Dynamics, Optimization and Bioeconomics”.
Alberto Adrego Pinto, researcher of INESC TEC’s Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support Laboratory (LIAAD) and Full Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, has just edited the third volume of the series “Modeling, Dynamics, Optimization and Bioeconomics”, alongside with David Zilberman from the UC Berkeley, California, USA.

A direção do programa, em Portugal, vai ficar a cargo de José Manuel Mendonça e Rui Oliveira, presidente e administrador do INESC TEC, respetivamente e, nos EUA, de John Ekerdt, Reitor Associado de Investigação em Engenharia e Marco Bravo, Diretor no IC2 Institute, ambos da Universidade do Texas em Austin.
José Manuel Mendonça and Rui Oliveira, president and member of the Board of INESC TEC respectively, will be in charge of the administration of the project while in the USA, John Ekerdt, Associate Dean in Engineering and Marco Bravo, director at the IC2 Institute, both from the University of Texas in Austin, will be the ones responsible.

Há mais uma tecnologia com assinatura portuguesa concedida nos EUA. Chama-se ACDC Cube e consiste num conversor eletrónico de potência mais compacto e eficiente. A tecnologia foi inventada por um grupo de três investigadores portugueses: Diogo Varajão, antigo investigador do Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores, Tecnologia e Ciência (INESC TEC) e atual diretor de investigação e desenvolvimento (I&D) da AddVolt, Luís Miguel Miranda, investigador sénior do INESC TEC, e Rui Esteves Araújo, investigador do INESC TEC e docente na Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP).

A participação do INESC TEC na Defexpo 2018 procura “dar à Índia a imagem de que o sistema de ciência português está junto com empresas”, explicou Vladimiro Miranda, membro do Conselho de Administração que integrou a missão portuguesa. Tendo projetos financiados pela Marinha dos EUA, e colaboração com a Força Aérea e a Marinha portuguesas, o INESC TEC está “numa boa posição para credibilizar as empresas e exportar tecnologia”.
INESC TEC participated in Defexpo 2018 in order to “give India the idea that the Portuguese science system works closely with companies”, explained Vladimiro Miranda, INESC TEC’s Member of the Board that was part of the Portuguese mission. With projects funded by the US Navy and working closely with the Portuguese Air Force and the Portuguese Navy, INESC TEC is “in a good position to make companies credible and to export technology”.

Nesta iniciativa, cerca de 30 investigadores puderam assistir à apresentação de oito artigos científicos de investigadores de diferentes países, nomeadamente Estados Unidos, Austrália, França, Itália, Dinamarca, China e Portugal, bem como às apresentações de dois oradores convidados, Frédérique Laforest, da Universidade de Jean Monnet – Saint Étienne, França, e George Karypis, da Universidade do Minnesota, EUA.
Around 30 researchers participated in the presentation of eight scientific articles of researchers from different countries, specifically USA, Australia, France, Italy, Denmark, China and Portugal. They also attended the presentations of two guest speakers, Frédérique Laforest from the Jean Monnet University - Saint Étienne, France and George Karypis of the University of Minnesota, USA.

É atualmente Professor Auxiliar na Universidade do Porto e Investigador Sénior do INESC-TEC, Porto. Em 2010 foi Professor Visitante na Carnegie Mellon University, EUA. Os seus interesses de investigação incluem desenho de circuitos integrados de baixa potência, de sinal misto e computação neuro-mórfica e bio-mimética, projeto de circuitos integrados CMOS RF para redes de sensores sem fio e eletrónica transparente.
Vítor Grade Tavares earned his undergraduate and MSc degrees from the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and the Ph.D. degree from the Computational NeuroEngineering Laboratory, University of Florida, Gainesville, USA, in 2001, all in electrical engineering. He is currently an Assistant Professor at University of Porto and Senior Researcher at INESC-TEC, Porto. In 2010 he was a Visiting Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. His research interests include low-power, mixed-signal and neuromorphic integrated-chip design and biomimetic computing, CMOS RF integrated circuit design for wireless sensor networks, and transparent electronics. He has coordinated several national projects, and also locally coordinated European projects. Most recent awards include co-recipient for the student best-paper award of the IEEE ICUWB 2014 and first place on TSMC design context in 90nm LP MS/RF in 2009. He was also awarded with a certificate of appreciation for contributions towards the advancement of IEEE and the Engineering Professions as Chair of the Education Society Chapter - Portugal section, which he co-founded.
