  RIDM - Forever
People come from around the world to stand at the graves of Balzac, Callas and Jim Morrison in Père-Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Surrounded by the tombs of the famous, the filmmaker decided to turn her camera on unnamed ordinary people – still very much alive. She emerges with a remarkable gallery of characters. Each generously shares a glimpse into their own story. Discreet and empathetic, Heddy Honigmann dresses their confidences in perfectly realized visuals.
Every summer, all over Quebec, they’re favourite hangouts for locals and passing tourists. Called cantines or casse-croûtes, these small seasonal businesses are often run by passionate folks who have made it their mission to preserve this distinctive slice of Quebec culture. Nicolas Paquet takes a close look at two of them: Chez Mimi in Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska and Le Connaisseur in Tadoussac. With Micheline and Nathalie’s testimonials set to a soundtrack by Fred Fortin, Esprit de cantine captures the unique atmosphere of these gathering places and wonders what the future holds for them in the face of stiff competition from major fast-food chains.
  RIDM - RIDM+ août : HIS...
is a lucid and touching portrait of Martin Stone, who has, for better and for worse, upheld 60s counterculture values all his life. Although he now works, ironically, as a security guard for a condo building, Stone still follows the principles of sharing and free expression that he adopted decades ago. Through testimonials from Stone’s children and old friends, Jean-André Fourestié tells not only the fascinating life story of a man who seems to have experienced all the iconic cultural moments of the 60s, but also explores the effects of the hippie lifestyle on children, who were often left to their own devices. The 2016 RIDM+ series has taken us around the world, and now
  RIDM - Mrs. Fang
Fang Xiuying is dying. Paralyzed, her mind ravaged by Alzheimer’s, the elderly woman is now only a suffering body on which the famous Chinese filmmaker has focused his camera, in search of the slightest sign of humanity. This patient, tender and deeply intimate observation contrasts sharply with the attitude of Mrs. Fang’s family and neighbours. At her bedside, they openly discuss her coming burial and her past mistakes, and some wander o to go fishing... Wang Bing delivers a portrait of life in a fishing village in southern China, where, for a few weeks, a woman lay dying while the men went about their business. A powerful work with deep metaphysical and political undertones.
  RIDM - Zaatari Djinn
Located in the heart of Jordan, 80% of the Zaatari Syrian refugee camp’s population are children. Amidst makeshift tents and scorching sand, they invent games and have extraordinarily imaginative dreams. Dutch director Catherine van Campen, whose Flying Anne (best short film, RIDM 2011) revealed her talent for entering the private world of children, followed four Zaatari children. Ferras is only 10 but works hard, and is troubled by his father’s remarriage. Fatma loves makeup and roosters, while Miryam wants to be an actress. And rich Hammoudi treasures nothing more than his soon-to-be-born little brother. All teach us remarkable lessons in resilience.
