I'm proud of the use of the multiplane camera in the movie. I think we have pushed the boundaries a little. It's so easy to do in the computer, and I've always loved the effect of the multiplane camera. It's so easy to see it's a flat 2D image, but still it moves in a 3D space. Pure magic. It is funny that it actually needs to look a little strange to be magic. In my opinion if it looks 100% natural you can't see that it is a trick and there is no magic. I think that is one of the main reasons why I prefer 2D over 3D. You can see it is a trick, but it is still moving. I read a book about animation history called 'Before Mickey' by Donald Crafton, and it surprised me that the first animators came from the vaudeville theater and not from newspaper illustration, therefore in a way an animator has more in common with a stage magician than with a painter or an illustrator.
