Horrenbestez, erlikiak gordetzeko eta jendearen aurrean erakutsi ahal izateko, erlikitegi-erretaulak sortu ziren ; halakoen hornazinek berek edo kutxatilen, bustoen edo beiraz hornituriko kutxen bidez eduki ohi zituzten ongileek grina handiz erdietsi nahi zituzten gorpuzkin haiek. Hemen tipologia horren ordezkari bizkaitarren berri ematea da gure helburua.

After the Council of Trento the worshipping of images was promoted in reaction to the assaults that the Catholic Church was suffering from the Protestants. The protestants denied any intermediary value to such images, while, at the same time, refusing to worship the bodies of saints. As a consequence of this spiritual renovation, altars with sacred figures proliferated and this also brought about an increasing desire to obtain the greatest possible amount of relics of the saints. Thus emerged the altarpiece reliquary, to keep such bodies and to expose them to public view. Their niches or glass chests, busts or urns kept the remains that benefactors keenly pursue. Our interest here is centred in outlining the Biskaian representatives of this typology.

Tras el Concilio de Trento y como reacción ante los ataques que la Iglesia Católica sufría por parte de los protestantes se potenció el culto a las imágenes cuyo valor intercesor negaban aquellos y, al mismo tiempo, la veneración de los cuerpos santos. Como consecuencia de esta renovación espiritual se multiplicarán los altares con figuras de personajes sagrados y, asimismo, aumentará el deseo por obtener el mayor número posible de reliquias de los mismos. Surge así, para custodiarlas y exponerlas a la pública consideración, el retablo relicario cuyas hornacinas guardarán directamente o a través de arquetas, bustos o urnas acristaladas los restos que los bienhechores persiguen afanosamente. Nuestro interés aquí se centra en reseñar los representantes vizcaínos de esta tipología.
