Polish and IUE students visited Menemen in November in order to promote Menemen pottery worldwide and get pottery the design and identity it deserved. Students brought back some clay and created their designs as part of an International Pottery Workshop (KULP). Menemen clay has been reshaped in Poland as part of the continuation of the project. Variety of products will be brought back to Izmir on October 12 – 26, and Menemen artisans will be informed.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Soysal said that risk of heart attacks and developing cancers decreased in people who quit smoking, and that smoking was to be blamed for premature deaths of 4.8 million people in 2000. She said that there should be more awareness raising activities for youth in order to stop peer influence on smoking. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Soysal said, “Studies reveal that deaths caused by smoking would decrease by 9% more in developed countries by 2030. However, death toll, caused by smoking, is estimated to reach about 8.3 million in developing countries.”

Prof. Dr. Oktar indicated that the reason for celebrating it on September 30th was the date being the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator, who is considered the patron saint of translators. Prof. Dr. Oktar reminded that the translators were the unseen heroes behind the intercultural communication. “The translators provide the intercultural communication in every sector related to social sciences, natural sciences, economy, diplomacy, art, medicine, law, literature, and such,” stated Prof. Dr. Oktar.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Er gave information about the workshop and she said they wanted to draw attention to interactive exhibiting and interactive media design. She said, “We asked the students to express concepts of storytelling and metaphor by using fabric materials, and their starting point was identified as Izmir, the city they live in. Students had an entertaining workshop when they expressed the spaces associated with Izmir, their memories and experiences associated with these spaces through fabrics. Everyone has the ability to tell a story by nature. Our students were able to express their ability to tell a story with design language, and outcome was a very successful and very pleasant workshop.”
