These sensors are so sensitive that they need to be produced under laboratory conditions. Even the smallest impurity can render the silicon wafers unusable. Not a single dust particle can be permitted to enter the Bosch wafer fab in Reutlingen in southern Germany. The maximum contamination level is equivalent to an apricot stone in Lake Erie. In fact, the work is so precise that measurements as small as 250 nanometers are used in series production. One nanometer is one-billionth of a meter, which in relation to a meter stick is the equivalent of the length of a USB stick compared with the Earth’s circumference at the equator (roughly 40,000 kilometers).
