In the story category of the contest co-organized with Izmir Provincial Directorate for National Education, Damla Kelle, student from Karşıyaka High school came in first place, Bilge Su Demir from Konak Izmir Girls High school came in second place, and Ayşenur Aslan from Buca Şerife Bacı Vocational and Technical Anatolian High school came in third place. İzmir Ekonomi Üniversitesi’nin İngilizce eğitim veren dünya üniversitesi olduğunu, farklı ülkelerden öğrencileri bulunduğunu aktaran Başkan Demirtaş, anaokulundan üniversiteye dek eğitimin her kademesinde olacaklarını, kolej kurduklarını, zekâ düzeyi ortalamanın üzerinde öğrencileri yetiştireceklerini söyledi. Demirtaş, Konak Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi’nde projesi olan öğrencileri destekleme sözü vererek, “Projelerinize mentorluk yapmak üzere mentor da sağlarız” dedi.

President Demirtaş indicated that Izmir University of Economics was a world university that offered instruction in English and it had many students from all around the world. He also said that they wanted to offer education at all levels, from kindergarten to university, and they aimed to train students with above average IQin the private schools they’ve recently established. Demirtaş also promised to support the students who have projects at Konak Art and Science Center. He said, “We can also provide mentors for your projects.” Following his speech, the students presented Demirtaş a plaque. Mehmet Ali Atakan, General Manager of Ekonomi Private Schools (K-12) and Asst. Prof. Dr. Evrim Üstünlüoğlu, Director of IUE School of Foreign Languages, also accompanied Demirtaş during his visit.

2 ay süren çalışmalarında İzmir Konak Meydanı’nda bir gençlik merkezi ve gençlik meydanı projelendiren Kayhan ve Ardalı, özellikle Saat Kulesi’nin ön plana çıkaran bir tasarım yaptı. Projede çelik yapının avantajlarının kullanarak bir gençlik merkezi tasarladıklarını söyleyen Ardalı, “Konak Meydanı’nı özel olarak seçtik. Gençleri bir araya getirmek, uyuşturucu, sigara, alkol gibi kötü maddelerin kullanımına karşı bilinçlendirmek için bir gençlik merkezi planladık. Tamamen çelik yapıdan oluşan bu merkezin en önemli özelliği, meydandaki tarihi saat kulesini ve camiyi ön plana çıkarmaktı. Proje, meydanı ön plana çıkardı. İlk kez kazandığımız bir yarışmada ödül almak çok güzel” diye konuştu.

Kayhan and Ardalı created a project in 2 months about a youth center and a youth square in İzmir Konak Square and they first made a design that featured specially the Clock Tower. Ardalı stated that they designed a youth center by utilizing the advantages of steel construction and said, “We chose Konak Square on purpose. We planned a youth center in order to bring the young people together and raise awareness about bad habits like drugs, cigarette, and alcohol. The most important feature of the center, which is totally made up of steel, is to show the clock tower and the mosque in Konak. It is very good to be awarded in a competition that we attended for the first time.”

Basın toplantısıyla birlikte başlayan projede her fotoğrafçı kura ile belirlenen 6 ilçede fotoğraf çekimleri yapacak. Konak ilçesi ise tüm fotoğrafçıların ortak çekim alanı olacak. Yaklaşık 10 ay sürecek çekimlerin ardından seçilen fotoğraflar baskıya ve sergiye hazırlanacak.

Each photographer will take photos in 6 counties selected by a drawing. Konak will be the common area for all photographers. After a 10 month shooting period, the selected photos will be prepared for printing and exhibition. Student of IUE Faculty of Communication and Department of Visual Communication Design will also take part in shooting and background shoots. The exhibition will be available as of April 2016. There will also be book signing, mobile exhibitions, and virtual exhibitions. Some of the selected photos will be presented as gifts to the domestic and foreign guests of IUE and ITO. Some of them will be turned into paintings.

“Öğrencilerimiz aynı zamanda Yamaha firmasının tasarladığı ve geliştirdiği elektrikli bisikletleri kullanma imkânına sahip oldular. “Our students had the opportunity to use the electric bicycles designed and developed by Yamaha at the same time. Following the presentation by companies and IUE students on Izmir and biking in the city, the groups developed electric bicycles services and business models. Students of Konak Bilim ve Sanat Merkezi (Science and Art Center) came together with foreign national instructors of Izmir University of Economics, where the medium of instruction is English, and practiced English for 2 hours. Instructors, working at IUE School of Foreign Languages, taught games to almost 60 students and got them familiarized with a new language.

Restoration of historical buildings causes cultural gravity effect and nurtures city economy. Based on the data by Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as part of retrieval of cultural heritage, 22 historical buildings in Izmir in 2016 were subsidized. Payment of 460 thousand TL for 9 buildings in Ödemiş, Konak, Foça, Bergama, Bayraklı, and in Tire was projected, and 247 thousand 201 TL was provided as a project support for 60% of 13 buildings.

Ama önümüzde 22 gün var ve bazı şeyler değişebilir. Gaziemir’de ve Karabağlar’da AK Parti alır. Güzelbahçe’de DSP önde görülüyor. Bayraklı ve Bornova’da CHP-AKP ve MHP yarışıyor. Buca da seçim halen ortada. Tabii tüm bunlar son anketler ve bizim gözlemlerimize göre. ’’

Akşam Newspaper Aegean Region Representative Nedim Atilla impressed the attendees of the conference with his predictions about the elections in İzmir. He supported that CHP will win the elections in İzmir even with a minor difference. Atilla stated that this is because of the elector structure of İzmir and said "Even though the emphasis on secularism is less in this election, it will be on the foreground in İzmir. The lecturer speakers presented some results about the elector profiles but ı would like to state what will happen in elections in İzmir with the freedom of being a journalist. The Metropolitan Municipality will be CHP’s consewuently Kocaoğlu's. I believe CHP will win the elections in Konak, Karşıyaka and Narlıdere. the latest surveys show this too. But we have 22 days and some things may change. In Gaziemir and Karabağlar, AKP will win. In Güzelbahçe DSP is leading. In Bayraklı and Bornova, CHP-AKP and MHP compete. In Buca, the election is still ambiguous. Of course, all these are the results of the latest surveys and our observations.”

Orhan Ersan ve Ferhat Hacıalibeyoğlu ise yine kendi tasarımları olan Mimarlık Merkezi’nin proje gelişim sürecini anlattı. İçmimarlar Odası İzmir Şube Başkanı Güntekin Noyan ve Mimarlar Odası İzmir Şube Başkanı Hasan Topal’ın de etkinlikte bulunması, mesleki ve mesleklerarası örgütlülüğü yansıtmasıyla ayrı bir değer oluşturdu.”

Izmir University of Economics hosted in-service training for 900 teachers on attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. The training, organized by Konak Guidance and Research Center, lasted for 2 days. Prof. Dr. Ercan, in his speech, stated that attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder was not caused by parents treating their child wrong. He said, “This disorder does not develop overnight. Genetic inheritance is a major indicator whether the individual will develop attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder in the future or not. Other than heredity, expectant mother being subject to tobacco products or lead, and alcohol may also trigger the disorder. Teachers can easily identify kids with hyperactivity disorder at school. These children are often labeled as ‘restless’, ‘energetic’, 'fidgety'. We get more successful results when parents, teachers, and guidance teachers act together."
