Competition for invited architects dealing with one of the last prestigious site gaps in the historical centre of Prague was a chance to try to turn the exclusivity of a top hotel at such a prime location into a spectacular experience. Not just in the hotel’s interior, but outside, too. Our aspiration was to hang a shining jewel on the neck of the Prague’s small fortification ring. The name of the hotel we chose had to impersonate this idea. more

Owing to an enlightened local council, Dolní Břežany became almost a synonym of good contemporary architecture and the care for public space. The community owns a dilapidated yet architecturally sound house in a historicist style. Aside of its renovation, an alteration of the courtyard buildings is being prepared where new flats should be built. Regarding the courtyard buildings, we had been inspired by additions ad hoc randomly tightly arranged we know from especially for example outbuildings of farmsteads in the Czech countryside. more

We consider the group of office buildings of the former Tranzitní plynovod company from the beginning of the 1970s located above the National Museum in Prague as a unique and quality architecture of its time we admire. Even despite this fact, we accepted the invitation to a competition dealing with the chance to partly or completely replace it with a new development. We did not win, but exploring possibilities to solve such a complicated urban situation was an exciting challenge for us, particularly for the necessity to completely reorganise the public space – and, more so, in a rather different manner for each of the volumetric alternatives. more

Where should one look for Lesy? In a forest, naturally! Our design totally harnesses the proposed location on the conceptual level. A place on the border of the city and nature surrounded by forest on three sides. That is why we selected the structure of a production forest as the primary symbolic analogy. This visual metaphor can, among others, allow for an unambiguous identification of the object when it is presented in front of the visitor’s eyes as the principal object of care Lesy ČR Co. is responsible for. It is, however, not only the building evoking the character of a natural environment but the entire space of its close surroundings. That is why an oak grove and the adjacent forest park dominate instead of parked cars here. The building itself, its materialization, efficiency, and environment it is placed in tell one common story: a story of responsible, efficient, and ecology-driven landscape management. more

Well, good traffic accessibility is a pro. Prague Castle behind the corner and the Střešovice residential neighbourhood behind the back. Well, there already is one not too small (pyramidal) hotel in this location, after all. Therefore, the question remains how the negative loading by traffic should be dealt with. An idea of a vertical glasshouse turned out to be the key to the concept. It had to separate the hairbrush containing guest rooms as a visual and acoustic, yet not a lighting screen. However, the glasshouse is in our case not encrusted from the inside, but from the outside, too. The structure of glazing frames evoking tree branches and trunks should be grown over in time and, through the climbing green, turn the seemingly rigid glass layer in a fluffy green fur coat here and there. Contrasting with the irregular pattern of green branches, the expression of the cluster of guestrooms is abruptly tight. Each unit spells a room; each room spells a circular window.

The service centre of the dynamically developing firm is situated on the edge of the town of Poděbrady. The oblong site adjacent to the main road is easily accessible from the D11 motorway. The building was created in the development area in the "green meadow". We attempted to satisfy the client's idea of a simple, functional building, which would be an advertisement for the firm. From this arose the concept of the shell as an ad exploiting the abbreviation of the company logo. The individual sections of the floor plan can be sensed in the mass of the building: sales and warehouse spaces, administrative and reserve spaces for the firm's expansion and company apartment for the owner. The entire building is connected through a central, spinal corridor lit with roof windows, which leads to the individual spaces. Everything is accessible without exposure to the elements. The elongated building is curved by the salesroom and director's office on the second floor, facing the access road to Poděbrady. To the rear of the building, space remained for a "captain of industry's villa", situated untraditionally behind the attic gable on the second floor of the building. The residential part of the apartment with a roof terrace is situated in such a way that a residential, private microcosm is created in this busy street in a more-or-less industrial development, with a view over the Labe valley fields. The facade of the oblong mass gradates by a narrowing of the overhead view and the rise of the steel construction in the area of the glazed salesroom, which is the most open part of the service building. The screening metal mesh of the facade is both an eye-catcher and a sunscreen. The size of the screen was selected to protect but not close off the building.

Naše úsilí jsme směřovali k vytvoření staveb jejichž architektura i dispozice nejsou podmiňovány materiály a mírou zpracování detailu, ale naopak vycházejí z logických vazeb okolní zástavby a přirozených požadavků v dané lokalitě.
The design concept is based on the competition brief. The scope and the limits were set down in advance. The site is clearly encased by the current street structure, the existing and the planned developments, and the area of the future park. We understand the location as a place for meeting different urbanistic structures. The planned buildings will establish a line of division between the new development in the BB Centre compound and the original tenement houses, torsos of the originally proposed blocks. We recognised establishing a functional line of division accepting the primary and the newly formed structure in the location as the main motive to which we submitted our design. We aimed our effort to designing buildings whose architecture and layouts were not conditioned by materials and the quality of details, but that build on logical links in the surrounding development and elemental requirements in the given location. The basic shape and position will not close the old houses behind the barrier of the Residenční areál/Residence Complex, but the other way around, it will allow as large optical expansion of the park beyond the border of the south facades of the designed buildings. The way the buildings are positioned does not accept a diagonal diverting of the street from its original direction. Buildings’ ground floors align with the street line defined by the warehouses. This arrangement will not only help to connect the future development in Baarova but, most importantly, a new space of a green square is defined this way where shops and services have their display windows. The whole compound is divided into two basic concepts. Three lowest houses (the west part of the residential compound) are located in a private park. An intimate area between houses follows on from gardens of the existing houses in Baarova. Residents will use them for relaxing. We assume that leisure areas, children’s playgrounds or areas for various activities (skittles, petanque, training golf green). After visitors pass through the main reception, the private park will be an excellent place for the first contact with the internal space of the residential compound. The area between the next three houses (the east half) is allocated for commercial functions and services. The design intentionally uses the north space in front of houses to define a new public square with decorative planting.

Na parcele se nachází v dnešní době již nevyužívané objekty jeslí jejichž stavebně technický stav a kapacita neumožňují konverzi pro nové využití. Paliativní centrum ale ve svém objemu částečně využívá skelet stávajících staveb.
The goal of the project is establishing and running of the first Complex Centre of Palliative Care in Prague that would offer Prague citizens modern and very much needed services that have been so far missing n the city. The purpose of this project is to provide maximum professional and human care to families taking care of their loved ones at the end of their life. The idea is to establish a friendly house with an atmosphere of a home, not at all reminding of a hospital. A house as open to the world as possible so that the idea of palliative care could be brought to life the best. Death is not a scare; dying person goes through a critical period of life deserving tactful help from the surroundings to be able to live with dignity and surrounded by love through this time. People should perceive a touch of such kindness, cosiness, light, and dignity even through the architecture of the space around. By its volumes, the building maintains a decently pleasant small scale. To support this feeling, we design the building with only two stories divided into several blocks defining clearly distinct, livable outdoor areas. Using primary, subconsciously known materials and plenty of plants will add to positive perceiving of the building, too. The arrangement of the palliative centre is based on the local situation. There are unused nursery buildings here today that cannot be converted due to their technical condition and capacity. The centre, however, uses the frame of the existing buildings in its volume. The building is structured in wings that, by their location on the site and by reciprocal links, establish a homogeneous structure of interconnecting functions: from the crossing of Znojemská and Přímětická where we locate the public services through the entry courtyard to the social welfare and ward blocks facing the privacy of a large garden. Colours and materials, facades: We tried to select colours and materials that would emphasise the straightforward and natural character of the building. We paid at the same time serious attention to colours in both the exterior and interior. Facades: The red colour is very stimulative; it is an active colour, warming, energising, and exciting deep emotions – we chose it for the corner block. White is strong. It is a light purifying the entire energy system. It stabilises, strengthens consciousness and creativity. The multi-purpose hall is a different part. It is unique by its roof and the back façade. Regarding the breadth of the plan, the following three alternatives of the scope were explored: Development Alternative 1/ Design preserving the Unimex building and the house Nad Museem Development Alternative 2/ Design preserving the house Nad Museem and razing down the Unimex building Development Alternative 3/ Design razing down both buildings – Unimex and Nad Museem The public and main pedestrian entry to the offices is approximately on the level of Rubešova (street) in each alternative. Given the large site, it is logical, that the office program cannot do with just one entrance; the standard is 3-4 entrances with individual lobbies. Those parts of the streetscape adjacent to the busiest pedestrian paths are consistently used for shops and services. Each alternative maintains a particular rate of passage through the internal area, although spaces between the new volumes can work with a specific possibility to close (limited by the daytime) and more intimate to semi-public areas of the streetscape are established that can be used for e.g. a canteen or restaurants. The fundamental principle – again common to each alternative – is perhaps restoring the original compact block structure of the place. It is natural that, based on the parameters of the brief these alternatives differ by the rate of openness – how open or closed the block is; but the thesis that contrary to the current situation – that the city is developed on the outskirts rather than inside – applies to each solution universally. Alternative 1 _ concept ‚ZET/Z‘ Alternative ZET reckons with preserving both buildings ´Nad muzeem´ and ´Unimex´. Regarding the height, the planned building is divided having a two-storied base, a main six-storied body, and an extension on the roof consisting of two stories stepping back. The design acknowledges horizontal division into stories. Where the building follows the street line, stories are allocated exactly above each other and this way form a mass similar to the surrounding development. Only there where the building reaches beyond the border of the land and tilts out into the block stories separate and their stories gap open as a fan. This way arranged to step back floor by floor lets space extend into the internal atrium like a funnel. As a result, the atrium opens upwards more and more and allows more daylight in the block. Objevy starobylých konstrukcí, podlah, sloupů, omítek a stavebních detailů byly natolik zásadní, že bylo rozhodnuto archeologické vykopávky nezasypat, ale zastropit železobetonovou deskou, osvětlit a zpřístupnit pro veřejnost.
The Saint Vitus Cathedral has a construction history of over 1000 years. The first ecclesiastical building in this place was a cylindrical rotunda with three to four apses built by Saint Wenceslaus. He was buried in the southern apse of his rotunda. A three-nave Romanesque basilica with east and west crypts and a preserved tomb apse of Saint Wenceslaus complemented by a capitulary cloister with an ambit and a bishop house was built in the 12th century. These structures were removed in the 14th century during the reign of Charles IV; a Gothic cathedral was built in their place completed to its contemporary form only in 1929. The new Gothic cathedral respected the Saint Wenceslaus’ tomb covering it by the magnificent Chapel of Saint Wenceslaus. An underground Royal Tomb was built on the Cathedral’s central axis. During the rule of Rudolf II in the 16th century, a marble mausoleum was built above it to accommodate tombs of Habsburg emperors. The Cathedral was renovated and completed under architect Kamil Hilbert at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Archaeological excavations were part of this renovation. Those conducted below the current Gothic cathedral discovered valuable authentic remains of all previous structures. The Royal Tomb was surveyed together with the surrounding tombs and, naturally, the Chapel of Saint Wenceslaus. Findings of ancient structures, floors, columns, plastering, and structural details were so crucial that a decision was made not to backfill them but span them by a concrete slab, illuminate, and open to the public. That was carried out according to Hilbert’s project in 1929 and remained more-or-less unaltered until our recent modification. Between 1934 and 1936, sarcophagi designed in the Art-Deco style by Kamil Roškot were added to the Royal Tomb. Our project for repairs regarded the entire public underground of the Saint Vitus Cathedral. The existing electricity wiring and cabling and old lighting were removed first. Then, restorers treated all original surfaces and cleaned stone elements by pressure steaming restoring original colours of walls and floors. Archaeologists conducted partial surveys at the same time and transported numerous fragments of architectural members to a depository. Original wrought railings separating visitors to the crypt from inaccessible areas were restored, and new steel elements with stainless steel netting were added. The designed fractured structure works with a typology of a family house primarily opened inward – that is inside the quiet corners of small inserted yards. In our opinion, the quality of housing is not harmed – on the contrary, it can become very comfortable and intimate. The houses get enough private space outside, do not cancel out and, moreover, enjoy the view of the central part of the garden. We can find their predecessors in historic Mediterranean dwellings (e.g. Apulian trulla) and in our country (Zlatá ulička/Goledn Lane) but namely in analogies with continuously added heterogeneous outbuildings that existed in similar situations perhaps most often. The common denominator is a micro-scale and irregular shapes of outer ‘residual’ spaces here. By the assumed (and newly re-told) volumes of masses and single-pitch roofs clinging to the border of the plots that we articulate by avant-corpses of masses of living rooms and their hip roofs we get a unique quality of lighting and sunlight in living areas inside – buildings do not block sunrays by casting a shadow. Material interventions to the old historicising building regard anything else but the roof. We replace the old entirely depreciated rafters a by new, also wagon-headed roof, yet with a higher ridge. We are getting better parameters of clearances and practical usability of the attic this way. We wanted to preserve the most authentic order of the roof possible intentionally. That was the reason why we did not opt for lighting the attic by adding new forms of dormers. Even roof windows would, in our opinion, spoil the classic appearance of the roof too much. That is why we opted for a belt window copying the perimeter of the house ‘cutting’ the roof through; nevertheless, from visuality reasons, we concealed it behind a finely perforated screen (transparent from the inside) aligned with the roofing level. The key element for the appearance of the courtyard house is its homogenous envelope. It is a traditional roofing of massive chipped timber shingles. This material allows obtaining the desired surface homogeneity without a border between the roof and walls; moreover, using it, the rounded roof shape can be flexibly followed – either convex or concave.

No matter how well the ´slab-like´ flat building of the famous Černigov hotel is established in the local setting, some urbanistic-compositional mistakes must be pointed out. Firstly, positioning the hotel at the square omitted the initially considered smaller scale of the area in front of the railway station. This fact relates to the time the hotel was built when the compact block-type city was not in anymore and ´no public space was large enough´. The hotel is located too far away from the railway station today, and the square consequently disintegrates. Černigov stands within a block-type town, but by its configuration (a large raised pedestal surrounded by a residual green no man´s land) it stands as a clear solitary structure. The basis of our selected concept of the material design is respecting the first local regulation and the situation introduced by the dominant building of the railway station. Thus, the first step in our principal was to rehabilitate the footprint of the original block. The key to a dignified opposing to the railway station is setting the front edge of the new building as close to the railway station′ s east front as possible. That is why we try to get our block slightly longer than 100 meters as close to the west border of the developable land as possible. To achieve the maximum in this respect, referring to the irregular course of the west side of the developable land, and due to the completed and irrevocable modifications of the streetscape, we had to remove one part of the block′s volume. A cantilevered ´urban pergola´ of generous dimensions was established this way. It can introduce a unique semi-covered public space with a clear height starting at 11 meters to Hradec Králové. This specific arcade lets daylight in feeding the existing trees while shielding hotel guests and passers-by from effects of adverse weather. Semantically (and not just due to its pitch) the arcade functions as a hypertrophied awning marking the hotel entrance. Nevertheless, the point of gravity and the genuine counterweight to the railway station becomes the very tall volume with guestrooms at the north-west corner of the new block we insert in here. Conceptually, this is a sort of a vertical ´recess´ of the block. The slab containing the guestrooms reaches the same height as the Černigov hotel; it just works with different longitudinal proportions and, above all, rotates the volume by its shorter side perpendicularly to the railway station building

Our design builds on the existing spatial structure of the compound and its surroundings. We consider the urbanistic form of this part of the Old Town as complete in fact; our ´interventions´ are limited to completing the compound following the footprints of the former yet currently removed buildings (see the historic photo and plans). In principle, we can say that both additions – ´S´ (north) and ´J´ (south) – are by their position and height modern additions to the once compact structure of the naturally developed Old Town. They, therefore ´rectify´ desurbanisation of this part of central Prague during which, due to slum-clearing and later lack of maintenance during the communist era, parts of building disappeared; we try to complement this structure making the urban structure compact again. The south addition ´J´ is a consistently modern four-storied building. The top story with a flat roof steps back while the existing historic building remains almost untouched. The north addition is a contemporary paraphrase to ´brutalism´ of the 1960s; a volume spatially and vertically copying the previous development documented by an imprint in the existing north gable – see the historical photo and plans, with a flat roof, too. The courtyard closed by the south addition is consistently designed as a quiet private zone for residents, as a safe and peaceful area within the block cultivated by the fine architectural detailing of stone paving and miniature garden architecture. The existing buildings around the courtyard will be completely renovated including conversion of lofts to flats; flats will be daylighted by ridged or single-pit dormers (facing the courtyard). Large and light flats will be built inside the buildings; consistently applied modern architectural design will preserve all valuable details and handicraft elements. The additions composed with modern large French windows have a traditional reinforced concrete frame with bricked walls; facades are engrained GRC panels in light ochre-white (addition ´S´) and sand-ochre tones (addition ´J´). The loft conversion gets daylight through a combination of ridge and single-pitch dormers. For circulation, we use only the current means: the existing staircases in both wings of the historic buildings and a minimal number of preserved corridors. Two new built-in lifts are located in all versions in the place of toilets and utility rooms at the end of their useful life in close touch with the existing staircases. An u

This arrangement will not only help to connect the future development in Baarova but, most importantly, a new space of a green square is defined this way where shops and services have their display windows. The whole compound is divided into two basic concepts. Three lowest houses (the west part of the residential compound) are located in a private park. An intimate area between houses follows on from gardens of the existing houses in Baarova. Residents will use them for relaxing. We assume that leisure areas, children’s playgrounds or areas for various activities (skittles, petanque, training golf green). After visitors pass through the main reception, the private park will be an excellent place for the first contact with the internal space of the residential compound. The area between the next three houses (the east half) is allocated for commercial functions and services. Již v zadání je popisována výjimečná situace, kdy místem prochází linie městských sadů, a pozemek sám je součástí rozsáhlých pobřežních luk protékající řeky Moravy. Jsme přesvědčeni o tom, že dobrý městský urbanismus není prioritně postavený na architektuře objektů, ale na konstrukci sociálních vazeb.
The place where this project should be built is flat; the junction of the Morava river and Mlýnský potok (creek) delineates its wedged shape. From the town planning perspective, the site enjoys the benefit of several important positives. Although it is outside the central zone of the town, the site is very close to it; it is very well connected to the municipal traffic network. Even the brief describes a particular situation when a belt of the municipal park runs through the place, and the site itself is part of a large flood plain on the bank of the Morava river. We believe that good urbanistic design does not a priori build on the architecture of buildings, but on the structure of social relations. The cornerstone of the urbanistic structure of our design is groups of houses – nests. Detached houses are arranged in three blocks above a common underground car parking with technical amenities. Spaces between them are designed so that they establish a semi-public intimate open courtyard where people know each other and feel its atmosphere as their home. A network of paths runs among groups of houses and private gardens made larger at junctions to allow neighbourly encountering. Paths are not closed; however, to use them, that is to leave the ´category one´ paths (see the previous text) means to make a step and get up to the level of raised private front gardens. Small semi-private squares are placed among houses. A central public square is designed in the centre of the plan, at the junction of pathways and other access roads to the compound. It is a typical urban concept we want to reapply here. We are talking about a square as a space for encountering, organising events, and activities, as a crossing of roads introducing the atmosphere and life into the town; a space for placing artworks, or a fountain, organising markets or cultural events. Site gaps naturally occur between the structure of houses and along it. This way, public areas are established where children’s playgrounds (northeast part) and fitness zones (east side, the Morava river bank) can be built. A concentrated development allowed freeing the south tip of the site at the junction and designing a relaxation meadow and a natural beach with trees here. The site adjoins the busy ´Aleja Jana Pawla II´ street. Randomly positioned warehouses and industrial buildings that will be completely razed down currently occupy the location. Both alternatives develop the architecture and concept of the layout from the east out away from Aleja Jana Pawla II (street). They assume, as suggested in the brief, that the area between the site and the busy street will be revitalised establishing a logical entry corridor with vast areas of green. We want to concentrate only pedestrian traffic into this part so that the entrances into buildings would be separated from resident and visitor car entries. All car entries including the supply entry are from Burakowska. We assume that this street will have a sufficient capacity to contain the planned traffic. We believe that modern office building should be preferably based on a simple, yet effective form building on proven standards, ´ergonomics´ and ´logistics´ of spaces and functions. In many previous designs and built projects, we could prove how important these standards are, as well as the fact that they are an important factor allowing meeting conditions of assessment of environmental impacts of buildings (e.g. BREEAM). Therefore, we consider the simplicity and straightforwardness of this design building on these standards as the leitmotiv of both the submitted alternatives. The site has not been severely affected by the concept of the surrounding buildings so far. The shape can be further developed allowing the best quality of daylighting inside while following the standard layout scheme and intensive use of the area. The depth of each segment, independent of layout, is ideal for an office building; it is designed modulated as 3 x 8.1 meters fitting into the concept of open space and individual offices defined by a layout scheme of a five-winged building. The basic segments arranged as altering behind each other allow for construction in two or three phases. Along with glazed areas recessed behind the surface of the front façade their arrangement naturally evokes the fragmentation of the core mass of the building dividing it into smaller sections and optically adapting it to the scale of the city – the city typical with its structure of buildings of a different height standing next to each other.

The design concept is based on the competition brief. The scope and the limits were set down in advance. The site is clearly encased by the current street structure, the existing and the planned developments, and the area of the future park. We understand the location as a place for meeting different urbanistic structures. The planned buildings will establish a line of division between the new development in the BB Centre compound and the original tenement houses, torsos of the originally proposed blocks. We recognised establishing a functional line of division accepting the primary and the newly formed structure in the location as the main motive to which we submitted our design. Jejich předchůdce nacházíme v historických sídlech středomoří (například apulijská trulla) i v tuzemském prostředí (Zlatá ulička), ale zejména v analogiích s postupně doplňovanými různorodými hospodářskými přístavky, které se v podobných situacích nacházely snad nejčastěji.
The designed fractured structure works with a typology of a family house primarily opened inward – that is inside the quiet corners of small inserted yards. In our opinion, the quality of housing is not harmed – on the contrary, it can become very comfortable and intimate. The houses get enough private space outside, do not cancel out and, moreover, enjoy the view of the central part of the garden. We can find their predecessors in historic Mediterranean dwellings (e.g. Apulian trulla) and in our country (Zlatá ulička/Goledn Lane) but namely in analogies with continuously added heterogeneous outbuildings that existed in similar situations perhaps most often. The common denominator is a micro-scale and irregular shapes of outer ‘residual’ spaces here. By the assumed (and newly re-told) volumes of masses and single-pitch roofs clinging to the border of the plots that we articulate by avant-corpses of masses of living rooms and their hip roofs we get a unique quality of lighting and sunlight in living areas inside – buildings do not block sunrays by casting a shadow. Material interventions to the old historicising building regard anything else but the roof. We replace the old entirely depreciated rafters a by new, also wagon-headed roof, yet with a higher ridge. We are getting better parameters of clearances and practical usability of the attic this way. We wanted to preserve the most authentic order of the roof possible intentionally. That was the reason why we did not opt for lighting the attic by adding new forms of dormers. Even roof windows would, in our opinion, spoil the classic appearance of the roof too much. That is why we opted for a belt window copying the perimeter of the house ‘cutting’ the roof through; nevertheless, from visuality reasons, we concealed it behind a finely perforated screen (transparent from the inside) aligned with the roofing level. The key element for the appearance of the courtyard house is its homogenous envelope. It is a traditional roofing of massive chipped timber shingles. This material allows obtaining the desired surface homogeneity without a border between the roof and walls; moreover, using it, the rounded roof shape can be flexibly followed – either convex or concave.

Záměrem nebyla prvosignálně čitelná symbolika, ale spíše náznak a sémantická nadstavba hlavního konceptu jednoznačně založeném na práci s masivními kmeny jakožto analogií lesa.
The volumetric design builds on the concept of an analogy with a commercial forest with an office building inserted into its regularly irregular structure. Massive trunks establish the spatial equivalent of a pattern all of us do know so well. Trunks are the vertical frame of the superstructure at the same time. This way, they are a simple ´product placement´ of the most important commodity the company trades. A building hidden in the ´forest´ can cut any shape in it in fact – it seems logical to us that it is as irregular as a forest in the country can be. The light and sunshine are filtered through branches – symbolised as a lightweight honeycomb pergola. When we contemplated about a proper definition of this way re-told forest, the abstracted outline of the territory of the Czech Republic crossed out minds. A hint; a semantic superstructure of the main concept unambiguously based on the idea of labouring with massive trunks as an analogy with a forest. In fact, we were surprised how organically this outline matched the shape of the developable site – even more so, we could meet the correct orientation to cardinal points. Everything not needing much daylight is hidden underground – into a concrete base. The sloping ground is used to bring daylight into the ancillary non-office rooms through a perforated exposed outer wall from the north. The concept of landscaping, surfacing, and green areas near the building closely relates to the visual concept. The entering into the building should be a pleasing experience. The sloping terrain and the pedestrian zone allows to work with (running and still) water, combine slightly different characters of the greenery on each side, prompts to install 3D pieces of art. The geometrically precisely modelled slopes are sliced through by no less exact cleavages of the entries into the car park. A widened throat with benches around a small water pool is in front of the entrance. An iceberg from which a forest grows up is fixed in the mound exposed only to the south where the entrance is. It is much better legible on the north side. Platforms cut into the slope are used as front gardens to the canteen, wellness, and facility manager’s flat here. The border between the building and the forest park is very tiny, naturally erased by growing trees. Z těchto důvodů je naší maximální snahou navrhnout veškeré novostavby jako objekty nekonkurující budově zámku, ale naopak tvářící se jako součást rehabilitované zahrady.
The position on a raised area close to a large roundabout makes this site perfectly visible. This post (it follows up from the simple rectangular structure of blocks of flats consisting of more or less monotonous buildings) downright challenges to become a visual centre, a sort of a reference point. The organically shaped, askew ´cut´ volume will be clearly visible and identifiable from cars passing by and when walking from the Metro. It will, at the same time, define a sort of an ´urban ´space´, an entry square between itself and the surrounding buildings. The building is positioned en face to this space; there are the lobby and entrances to the restaurant located here. The oval volume does not disturb the surrounding and respects all existing routes in the area that seem as if they ´flowed´ around it. We gave the building the above-mentioned oval shape with an internal atrium. Offices are arranged along the internal and external façade. The skew shape of the building is not designed at the expense of effectiveness – aside from giving the building the necessary dynamics, it allows to open the entrance lobby two stories up clearly establishing a clear-cut forefront to it. On the opposite, the top story (approximately half in size) this way obtains large terraces hidden behind the parapet on the north side. Technology equipment that must be placed on the roof is sunken in the vegetation in the highest area (above the main vertical core); it is disguised in a sort of a ´private atrium´, and therefore nothing disturbs the image of a compact green roof.

The basis of our concept of the design of the building′s mass is respect to the primary regulation of the area and the situation established by the site morphology and accessibility. The building’s mass design focuses on working with two orthogonal boxes. The orthogonal volumetry is linked to the most economical utilisation of the playfield. Box 1 is, therefore, a gym. A gym needs high clearance; it needs daylight; yet lighting, i.e. an opening on the floor level, is not optimal for it. That is why the greater part of Box 1 is recessed in the ground along the east edge of the site with the floor on the 1st basement level. Visually, it is represented by the simplest possible block with translucent glazing along the perimeter of vertical sides. Box 2 is also a glazed block. There are nevertheless several minor differences. It is full of offices on two levels, and it is lengthwise wrapped in dark material keeping the longer sides open. Box 2 ´levitates´ above the courtyard because it contains a free car park below. In footprint, both boxes are seemingly of the same size. They differ in height that makes provision for the position towards the slope. The visual key to the material and formal appearance of the building is a presentation of the additions as a variation on the theme of two ´sibling´ transparent boxes; the bigger of these two gets an extra outer envelope. Therefore, the main pair of materials is glass (translucent in the form of Profilit glass or transparent in the form of clear flat glass) and the firm anthracite grey cladding establishing the envelope (sheet metal, Eternit, and similar). The dark envelope of the bigger box is broken by circular openings on the north and south fronts paraphrasing the motive of a rainbow marble. Rekonstrukce objektu proběhla v devíti etapách za provozu uživatelů a zahrnovala nejen interiér vlastní budovy včetně krovu, suterénů a nádvoří, ale i parkán nad zahradou Na Valech, generální opravu soklu budovy a omítky do Jiřské ulice a v Rožmberském nádvoří.
By its monumental façade, the new Institute of Noblewomen became this way an outstanding building within the Hradčany skyline. The Institute was closed in 1918, and the Ministry of Interior made it its offices for a long time. Access to the building was restricted, and performed alterations were inappropriate altogether. Among those worst were the built-in garage and petrol station on the Rosenberg courtyard, a stand-by power generator and oil fuel-management areas in the second basement, a training firing range in the former Schwarzenberg House, and many modern partitions and suspended ceilings with plenums packed with cables. The refurbishment was carried out in operation in nine phases including not just the interior, the building, its roof, the basements, and the courtyard, but the fortification above the Na Valech garden, the building’s base, and renders to Jiřská and the Rosenberg Palace courtyard. The condition of the brief was that construction work would be carried out regarding the tenant, the logics of operation, and the investor’s financial capacity dependent on the state budget. Prague Castle Administration and Castle Police offices, textile restoration workshops, and Castle collections depositories occupy the greater part of the ground floor and the first floor. The first basement contains restorer workshops, rooms and repositories of the Archives of the Office of the President, a detached establishment for the Institute of Archaeology CAS, and the areas around the Rosenberg Palace courtyard with a hall and a coffee shop open to the public. The Renaissance vaulted Rosenberg Hall, during the renovation by Pacassi divided in a corridor and four rooms with inserted flat ceilings, was cleared of these additional structures and structurally stabilised; the Hall, now in its almost original condition, will be used for various cultural events and exhibitions. The Baroque Chapel of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was also restored; the complete three-storied space, into which additional floor structures were inserted in the 1920s, will be used for the same purpose as the Hall. The embedded floor structures were removed, almost entirely salvaged frescoes on walls and the ceiling were restored as well as windows and doors; two new organ lofts were reconstructed. The main staircase with a portico bearing the emblem of the Institute of Noblewomen at the top, one of the most valued Baroque spaces in the building, was restored either. Mode

Budova bývalého nakladatelství Albatros se nachází v centru Prahy nedaleko pěší zóny. Jedná se o nárožní dům na rohu Národní Třídy a ulice Na Perštýně. Sousedí s domem U Medvídků. Objekt je součástí historické části zástavby v památkové zóně, není evidován jako nemovitá kulturní památka, je památkově chráněn v rámci chráněného území Pražské památkové rezervace.
The former Albatros publishing house is found in the centre of Prague near the pedestrian zone. It stands at the corner of Národní třída and Na Perštýně next to the U Medvídků house. The building is part of the historical protection area; it is not a listed building, but it is protected in the framework of the Prague Monument Reservation. The corner ´U Ratzenberků´ or once ´U Braunerů´ house stood here in the 19th century bearing the name of Dr František Brauner MP who had bought it in the 1860s. The famous Union Café was here then, the place favoured by many notable persons such as Alois Jirásek, Mikoláš Aleš, Antonín Dvořák, Josef Václav Myslbek, later Fráňa Šrámek, Jan Stursa, Jaroslav Seifert or Karel Čapek who fought to salvage the house and coffee shop. Eventually, the house was razed down in 1950, and a modern office building with a unique and spectacular curtain wall façade by Italian FEAL was built here for the Albatros publishing house in 1968. The project was led by architect Stanislav Franc in cooperation with the team of Stanislav Franc – Luděk Hanf - Jan Nováček. The building was refurbished several times after the Velvet Revolution, and even the original façade was replaced. The last modernization of mostly the technical equipment took place in 2003. The building is divided into two blocks – the office building is the higher, ten-storied mass; the lower, two-storied part contains the car entry to the garage operated by an automatic parking system, and the technology entry. There are two basement stories below the whole building. The main entrance is from Na Perštýně; there is a guarded reception behind it. Česká spořitelna (saving bank) has a branch on the ground floor. Offices, technology control room, and restrooms are on the first floor. The area is made smaller here because the structural height of the bank hall is double. The basic layout of the second to the eighth floor is the same. The building’s core is established by a central staircase, two personal lifts, technology shafts (next to the staircase), restrooms, and kitchenettes. A corridor runs along the core with entrances to individual offices of different size. The eight floor steps back. The ninth floor is allocated for technology: there are a boiler room, ventilation and lift mechanical rooms here, and a diesel backup power generator here. Současný stav a využití náměstí je zcela v rozporu s jeho významem. Dnešní „náměstí“ není bohužel veřejným prostorem, ale pouhým dopravním uzlem Starého Města a parkovištěm nebo spíše úložištěm vozidel, která zcela beznadějně zaplňují všechny jeho plochy.
The current condition and use of the square are in absolute conflict with its relevance. Unfortunately, the ´square´ as it looks today, is not a public space, but just a traffic node and a parking lot or rather a car dumping ground in Nové Město hopelessly occupying the entire place. Therefore, to reintroduce the genius loci means to solve the problem of parking and traffic in its vicinity. Our design consists of an underground car park to be built in the north part of Mariánské náměstí in such a manner that it would pass by the foundation of the ancient Gothic church of the Virgin Mary Na Louži, the position of which we know from preserved plans. Our goal is to regulate traffic on the square to the maximum and channel cars to the underground car park. The design reckons with the entry into the underground car parking along the north front of Klementinum in Platnéřská where the existing lowered ground at the foot of the buildings can be used for an entry ramp. The exit way is designed next to the walkway along the north façade of the Nová Radnice/New Council Hall in Platnéřská. After the car parking is constructed, the square’s surface will be restored to its former softly sloping shape; old granite cubes and kerbs will be used to re-pave the area giving it a unified and grand-scale touch. The design leaves the large central area empty; entertainment, cultural, and social events can take place here. We situated a traditional gas-fuelled cast-iron street lamp on a granite plinth in the middle of the square that will charm every passer-by with its soft light. Public lighting is ensured by gas lanterns on the square’s perimeter. To make the square more visitor-friendly, we suggest benches fixed in the ground placed along the buildings. A lime tree will be planted in the ground in the corner in front of Trauttmannsdorf Palace on a circular pedestal with benches. The concept of the renovation of Clam-Gallas Palace plans to plant two grown-up plane trees behind the wall bearing the ´Terezka´ fountain that will frame this lovely place and make it cosier. A unique new element within the square’s structure is the mention of the existence of a Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary Na Louži that gave the beautiful name to this place – Mariánské náměstí (Marian Square). We propose that the by an archaeological survey verified outlines of the old church masonry are visualised and restored in the pavement. The image of its floor always visible after heavier rains will perma
