Een team van Europese archeologen en wetenschapsmannen komt uit Peru terug en zij hebben de mummie van de Inca Rascar Capac meegebracht. Zij zijn nauwelijks thuis aangekomen als de ene na de andere door een mysterieuze ziekte geveld wordt. Een vreemde aanwijzing wordt naast elk slachtoffer ontdekt: stukjes kristal die aan kristallen bollen doen denken. Zal Kuifje dit mysterie kunnen onthullen vooraleer het te laat is?
