How could an apparently uncomplicated project get so out of hand? “RandstadRail appeared straightforward, even though it was a new form of transport. Existing rolling stock would be used on the existing rails. The operator was experienced and the technology was bought ‘off the shelf’. So what could possibly go wrong?” asks Koppenjan. Leijten: “If things had gone just a little differently, everything would have been a success. The points at Forepark would not have been damaged, or the fault would have been discovered in good time. There would have been no incidents. If things had gone just a little differently, it would have been a fantastic project: a good public-transport system, delivered within budget and almost on schedule. Some people say that RandstadRail was dogged by misfortune, and in a sense they are right.”

“I hadn’t expected all those positive reactions beforehand”, says Nikki Oude Elferink, one of the students. “When we started the assignment, I had trouble working out what would be realistic and how we should translate the information into a strategy. We learned as we went along. Before the presentation, we had no idea of how our recommendations would be received. It’s so inspiring to see that people are interested, that they react enthusiastically and acknowledge that we have a number of really good points.”

Ignacio: “The Simio Student Competition represented what I have enjoyed the most about the EPA Master so far: a combination of engineering analytical procedures leading to recommendations on what policies to implement to improve the performance of a system. This was a true exercise of teamwork, innovation and organization, and an opportunity to experience what a simulation project entails from the purely technical aspect up to the client-oriented deliverables. I encourage future EPA students to take part in subsequent editions of the competition.”

It was clear to Poelman that the game had to be state-of-the-art. "We often hear that so-called fun games are miles ahead of serious games with respect to technology." Groen and his team develop the games which researchers such as Warmelink and Poelman come up with. "It is essential that Shell is given an idea of what this type of world looks like and how it can move within it. We chose Schoonebeek, as all company personnel are familiar with that location," Groen explains. Schoonebeek (municipality of Emmen, Drenthe) is a training facility for Shell employees. Warmelink and Poelman held interviews with Shell personnel on location and elsewhere in order to make the environment as realistic as possible. Photos, video clips and even maps from Google Earth have also been used. "That's why the game looks so good and so realistic," Poelman says.
  TU Delft: URWAY
wants to learn. If children continually drop out of school it is basically because they have never been presented with a learning concept that actually suits them," says Wim Veen, explaining URWAY. The project involves encouraging early school leavers between the ages of 15 and 18 to start learning again. And it works. The project has now been running for almost three years and 120 youngsters have taken part. One third of these have now started working and another third opted to continue with a new course. These are very high figures for a group of school refusers who seemed immune to any other remedial measures taken. The remaining third are still involved in URWAY or have dropped out of the project. The project has an 11% dropout rate.

In addition, the Delft School would like to offer more practicebased PhD programmes (the PD Engs), a new phenomenon in the academic world. “There are many professionals aged around thirty or forty who would very much like to acquire a deeper knowledge of a particular aspect of their work and who would like to gain a PhD in the subject. Examples that come to mind are risk management, security, privacy and asset management. However, they are deterred by the idea of embarking on a complete academic programme. They will therefore shortly have the opportunity to write a PhD thesis on the basis of slightly different criteria than those for regular PhD programmes.”
