Le 11 septembre 1973, date qui résonne étrangement aujourd'hui, Salvador Allende est acculé à la mort par un coup d'état orchestré par les Etats-Unis, Richard Nixon ayant organisé depuis longtemps la débâcle du Président chilien, «ce fils de pute» comme il se plaisait à l'appeler. Cette mort forcée d'Allende marquait au Chili le début d'une des dictatures les plus violentes du XXe siècle.
