  Domani medal race Garda...
Winning hands down one day early is Conti-Clapcich 3-1-8-1: they will go into the medal race with a 23 point lead. This is their first win on the 49er FX . In second place are Spaniards Echegoyen-Betanzos (helms woman Tamara was a gold medallist in the London games in the match race). Germans Meyer-Stoffers recuperated to come in third with a first and a second today. 10 athletes from 10 nations will compete in the medal race.

In the men's windsurf competition Italian Daniele Benedetti dominates. Although he was slightly less brilliant today he managed to hold onto the lead with 4 firsts, a second and a discarded fourth. Hot on his heels is fellow national Mattia Camboni who today took two firsts and a second. With 13 points is Gadorfalvi of Hungary in third place (3-4-3-). In the women's category Meg of France took over the lead, today taking a first and two seconds which were enough to put her 6 points ahead of fellow Hungarian Belbeoch (3-3-4). It was a disappointing day for Cholnoky of Hungary who dropped into third position one point behind second place.

After seven races, the ranking looks quite similar to yesterday. On Sunday, the final race with the top 157 sailors competing in the Gold Fleet will proclaim the winner. The American Stephen Baker is still first, who sailed fast even with strong wind despite being light. Behind him the German Müller, Steidle, Krauss and the Italian Jan Pernarcic (YC Cupa). The home athlete Tommaso Boccuni is seventh. Good performance of the Sicilian Andrea Marotta (CN Gela) placed ninth. The Russian Liksanova, twelfth overall, is the first female.

This is one of two classes (together with the Finn) where the Italian Olympic selection was decided with the medal race. The medal race was won by Michele Regolo. 10th and last was Giacomo Bottoli who lost his qualification by just 1 point. 2nd in the medal race was the other athlete of Fiamme Gialle, Marco Gallo, but too far behind on points to be a threat to anyone in the final. It was a heart-stopping final since Regolo had initially started in 4th position, not enough to beat Bottoli, who was 9th. It was then that Regolo started his attack and was able to pass in front of everyone due to his tactical skills that he maintained on the left part of the course. Bottoli, instead fell back a position and saw his Olympic qualifications disappear in front of him. The final classification has Croatian Mihelic in 1st place, overtaking his compatriot Taritas. Stelmaszyk of Poland took the bronze.

Two races were completed today for a total of four for the cadets with the worst race being discarded, as in the rules. Right from the start the team from Poland showed its determination to win a place on the podium. They occupy the top three positions in the temporary standings. Szmit still holds the lead with three 1sts and a 4th, followed by Golebiowski who today moved up with second and a first. Abramowicz is equal on points (today with 2 partial thirds). As for the Italians, Gregorio Moreschi (Fraglia Vela Riva),did well today with a 3-2 after a 9-23 of yesterday. A good 9th place for Federico Caldari (CN Cesenatico) who dropped today with a 17th and a 41st (discarded). Among the girls is American Maddie Hawkins who lies in 8th place. For the finals it looks like the Poles will have at least one place on the podium if they keep up the form they have been showing the last three days.

The juniors – 805 total – had several races in challenging conditions, with wind gusts from the south reaching 25 knots for yesterday and today's last races. As predicted, the battle for the podium came down to the last race with final victory slipping away from Patrick Zeni (Fraglia Vela Malcesine) as happened in 2009. Yesterday he had been in the lead after eight races. There was a comeback, instead, for Isik of Turkey (fourth yesterday), who jumped ahead of Zeni by just one point, by taking a first on the last race. In third place, four points behind, was Lamay of Germany. Among the girls, victory went to European Optimist Champion 2011 Francesca Bergamo (CN Alto Adriatico), who came in 8th overall. The top ten of this category is also multi-national with Italy taking four of the positions together with Turkey, Germany, The U.S.A., Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland.

It was a fight to the finish for the Italians for the coveted title of the Junior category (with 854 participants from 12-14 years), which ultimately went to Alexandra Stalder of Bardolino del Garda, Italy and who demonstrated great skill and strong determination. Alexandra, (Circolo Nautico Bardolino), actually won the category by an impressive 12 points over Clapp of G.B. Alexandra, who is in the national team of Optimist Class Italia, had been in the lead after the first day but had slipped to 3rd place with two races to go behind national Optimist team-mates (GAN) Silvestrini (CN Porto San Giorgio) and Tezza (Fraglia Vela Riva). On the last day, however with the sunshine and a light wind from the north (which later switched to the south with gusts of 20 knots), Alexandra Stalder sailed to the top of the standings. She had a good partial win on the penultimate race which paved the way for a final victory beating Clapp of G.B. taking first place by a comfortable 12 points. She is by no means the first girl to have won the Garda Optimist Meeting outright. The last was in 2009 with Cecilia Zorzi of Trentino and before that our own Olympian Giulia Conti in 2000. But for the moment Alexandra remains focused on the World Optimist Championships in July...at least for now!

After four days of competition at its highest level, the D-One Gold Cup drew to a close today. The event, organized by Fraglia Vela Riva, is valid as a fourth round of the Volvo Cup 2011. It was a pleasure for Fraglia Vela Riva to host this emerging and innovative D-One fleet, since its creator Luca Devoti trained right here on Lake Garda. Over the last two days three times World Laser Champion Tom Slingsby of Australia – training here on Trentino Garda for the London Olympics – has shown his power and bravura finishing with three partial victories, giving him the top spot on the podium. His adversary throughout the event, Nick Thompson of Great Britain, came second, and in third place was fellow Brit Giles Scott, the current European Finn Champion, who snatched the third place away from Italian Andrea Casale. Casale was by no means intimidated by these three champions, and even though he hadn’t been on a craft for many years, threw himself into the leaders group from the very start. It was interesting to follow the progress of the D-One on water, which is a single boat, and certainly brought out the best of these great European champions from the Laser and Finn Olympic classes.
