The posters that accompany the Festival’s 68th edition constitute a series of portraits of festival-goers. This photographic project, a concept devised by the Anglo-Swiss agency Jannuzzi Smith, was undertaken during the last edition of the Festival. Every day dozens of festival-goers were photographed: passionate film fans, critics, actors and actresses, directors and all the various categories of professionals who work in the film and festival world.

Ho amato questa storia di solitudine, e il fatto che fosse basata su una persona reale. Abbiamo girato per una settimana, ogni giorno, dalle otto della mattina a mezzanotte, ma ne valeva la pena. Ognuno era giovanissimo e pieno di energia, l’ho amato.
I liked this story about loneliness, and the fact that it was based on an actual person. We worked for one week, every day, from 8 in the morning to midnight, but it was worth it. Everybody was very young and filled with energy, and I liked that.

  Omaggio a Clemens Klopf...  
Il matrimonio tra il Festival del film Locarno e la Cinémathèque suisse ogni anno si rinnova, con regali speciali. Almeno due, in questo 2016, riguardano il regista bernese Clemens Klopfenstein, poeta della notte, luogo e spazio cinematografico che lui con la pellicola ha saputo rendere unico, filmandola in diverse città del mondo in Geschichte der Nacht.
The marriage between the Festival del film Locarno and the Cinémathèque suisse gets renewed every year, with special gifts. In 2016, two of these concern Bernese director Clemens Klopfenstein, the poet of the night, a cinematic location and space that he’s made unique through film, shooting it in various cities throughout the world in Geschichte der Nacht. As stated by the Cinémathèque’s director Frédéric Maire, it’s an experimental masterpiece that has often had the misfortune of being screened in museums, theaters and festivals in terrible conditions. However, thanks to a digital restoration carried out by the Cinémathèque suisse, the association Memoriav, the University of Basel and the director himself via the Cinegrell laboratory, it has reclaimed it beauty and uniqueness. As part of the Histoire(s) du cinéma program, we will also see another film by the same director, the disorienting WerAngstWolf, featuring Bruno Ganz. While Klopfenstein’s work is scheduled at the beginning of the Festival (August 3, 4 and 5, Teatro Kursaal), another surprise is coming on the penultimate day, August 12, at the Auditorium FEVI. The Cinémathèque suisse has another unmissable proposition, L’Inconnu de Shandigor, a cult film from 1967: director Jean-Louis Roy works on genre with irony and inventiveness, with an antihero in the shape of Von Krantz, an unusual mad scientist (in that he wants to save the world, not dominate or destroy it), and Serge Gainsbourg as a “leader of bald people”, ripe for rediscovery. Especially when seen in the 4K restoration made by the Cinémathèque suisse using the original 35mm negative as a starting point.

Studente di scienze economiche e politiche all’Università del Cairo, poco più che ventenne si accorse, Yousry Nasrallah, di essere attratto irrimediabilmente da quel grande schermo che fin da piccolo lo faceva sognare. Entra nel 1973 nella Scuola Superiore di Cinema e percorre il sentiero della Settima Arte fermandosi a ogni stazione.
When he was a student of econimic and politic sciences at Cairo University, still in his twenties, Yousry Nasrallah realized he was attracted by the same big screen he dreamed about as a child. In 1973 he started attending the École Supérieure du Cinéma and started going through the Seventh Art in all its forms. Film critic, screenwriter, assistant of a master like Youssef Chahine (with whom he wrote two movies), and of course director. Immeidately acclaimed since his first movie Sarikat sayfeya (Summer Thefts, 1988), awarded at several festivals and selected at Cannes Film Festival ‘s Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, Yousry Nasrallah comes back to Locarno after 17 years. In 1999 he showed al-Madina (The City), a innovative movie about contents and aesthetic, talking about a man looking abroad for an evanescent and colorful success and then going back to Egypt. A movie somewhat complementary to the one he’s presenting this year, totally focus on complex social and family realtionships, in a microcosmos based on money, feelings and broken patterns. And, most important, he come back after the Arab Spring which he lived on his own skin, armed with his camera (this is the idea behind Baad El Mawkeaa, After the battle) and his good will in his teaching cinema to new generations. Trying always to explore and witness his Country present and possibly future.
