This is probably the most important single area in Banff National Park for migrant waterfowl. As soon as open water forms along the lake edges in late April, flocks of the common species as well as occasional Tundra Swans, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shovelers, White-winged and Surf Scoters, and Hooded and Common Mergansers begin to arrive. Bald Eagles nest in the area and are seen regularly. Canada Geese nest along the lakes and frequently take over Osprey nests before their owners return.

In addition to squared lumber, swan lumber was needed at fur trade posts for various purposes. Sometimes it was used to line the inside of buildings or to create walls within structures. Sawn lumber was also good for flooring. At Rocky Mountain House much of the sawn lumber was used to build York boats or bateaux. The post journals regularly refer regularly to men cutting boards at a pit saw across the river.

This mountain range, located along the northwest boundary of the park, gets its name from a spectacular formation of ragged granite peaks. They are the highest peaks in the Northwest Territories and contain extensive glaciers. They were formed 110 million years ago when molten igneous rock was injected into the earth's crust from the underlying mantle. As it hardened and cooled, it pushed the sedimentary rock up from below. Over time, the upper layers of sedimentary rock eroded, exposing the hard granite of the Ragged Range. The last glaciation, which ended 10 000 years ago, sculpted the formation which is seen today.

Beaver can alter the environment to suit their needs. Here in the channel, beavers built a dam to raise the water level to a depth sufficient for the construction of their lodge, and for the caching of a winter food supply below the frozen surface of the water. The beaver have now moved farther upstream. An active lodge, food cache and evidence of their handiwork in the felled trees in the surrounding woods can be seen.

To support any economic activity, certain basic services must be established. Soon after they had arrived from Guernsey in 1817, the brothers Pierre and William Simon began to take action. Within a few decades, they had made Anse-aux-Sauvages into a nerve centre. A sawmill was opened in 1841, providing facilities for the locals to process wood quickly for building boats, fishing installations and houses. A flour mill also came into operation, to which fishermen-farmers from all around brought their wheat to be ground into flour, a staple food in their diet.

Several lakes were sealed off by old dams that even now seem to capture the echo of the log drivers and the sound of the logs rushing downriver. In the underbrush, there are still old stumps, which are all that remains of this legendary time. This exploitation also changed the composition and structure of the forest. As a result, there is now a greater diversity in its make-up and development.

The simplest saw pit was not a pit at all. Instead, large timber could be sawn on heavy trestles or very large saw horses. Unfortunately, this did require manhandling the timber onto the trestle -- hard work that could be avoided by building a pit or using a natural hollow. Even with a pit, you would need a frame to support the log being sawn. Usually saws were designed to cut on the down stroke, so the lower man in the saw pit pulled the saw, while the upper man lifted the blade up and out on the upstroke.

During the construction of the locks at Merrick’s Mills, Lt. Col. By went to great lengths to ensure that the grist and saw mills would not be destroyed by rising water levels. This endeavor slowed the pace of work and increased expenses. Unfortunately, in 1831, when the section of the canal from Bytown to Smiths Falls was ready to be opened, William Merrick decided to dam the Rideau River above Merrickville in order to make repairs to his mills. Because water levels were affected, Lt. Colonel By’s grand opening became impossible. Soon after, a new law was introduced that prevented unauthorized changes to the waterway.

The term refers back to the days before mechanized sawmills when lumber was milled by hand by two men on either end of a whipsaw (one straddling the log and working from above – the topsawyer – the other working beneath the log in a sawpit – the pitman). Early sawmills replaced manpower with a water wheel or windmill connected to a whipsaw. The shaft that converted the rotary motion of the water wheel or windmill to the up and down motion of the whipsaw was referred to as the pitman arm in reference to man in the sawpit whose job had been replaced.

Colonel By and the Department of Ordnance were acutely aware of the possibility of future crisis with the United States. Even before construction of the canal, Merrickville was considered to be a logical target for an American invasion due to its proximity to the American border and location on a main artery from the St. Lawrence settlements. Harlequin ducks gather along the Bow at this time of year before dispersing - the females to nest in small mountain streams and the males to return to the Pacific Ocean. Watch for them on gravel bars and small islands. You may also spot American Dippers, Spotted Sandpipers, Bohemian Waxwings and Common Mergansers. If you are canoeing please stay far enough from waterfowl to keep from flushing them. This is a popular canoeing river and a sensitive time of year for breeding waterfowl.
