Con un lavoro incredibile i contadini gli hanno strappati alla foresta, falciando a mano i frutti dei campi e dei prati, troppo inclinati per rendere possibile l’uso di macchine agricole. Gli antichi masi si inseriscono nel paesaggio naturale, i fienili nelle tonalità scure del legno, spesso una piccola cappella accompagna i gruppi di case.

We reach the starting point of this stage of the Alta Via di Merano by taking the Unterstell cable car and hiking from its mountain station to the Patleid and Linthof farms on trails n° 10A and 10. From here, the Alta Via di Merano branches off into the Val Senales, offering beautiful views of the Val Venosta and Reinhold Messner’s Juval Castle.

Vorbei an der Jausenstation Inner-Unterstell geht es kurz steil abwärts und dann langsam am westlichen Hang des Schnalstales weiter. Einige der steilen Hänge sind seit Jahrhunderten bewirtschaftet: In mühevoller Arbeit haben die Bauern hier Wiesen angelegt, wo auch heute nur mit Hand gemäht werden kann - so steil sind die Hänge. Malerisch fügen sich die Bergbauernhöfe in die Naturlandschaft ein, die Stadel traditionell in dunklem Holz. Vielerorts stehen kleine Hofkapellen.
