  The genus
The genus Rytidosperma is a group of southern hemisphere grasses in the subfamily Danthonioideae. Several species have been introduced in forage trials into regions of the United States, of which 5 have become naturalized in California, Oregon and Hawai‘i in grasslands and ruderal habitats. The species present in the USA are described and new chromosome counts are reported for R. racemosum and R.richardsonii from California, and R. caespitosum from New Zealand.

The domestic market is the most important market for Canadian wines. Annual per capita consumption increased between 2000 and 2007, growing from 11.3 to 14.6 litres, implying total domestic market consumption of approximately 470 million litres in 2007. According to Statistics Canada, growth in domestic wine consumption in recent years has out-performed that of beer and spirits. But consumption is still low compared to other major wine-producing countries such as France or Italy, where per capita consumption is more than four times that of Canada.

Conventional tillage, not conservation tillage, is the dominant tillage practice in the STC Watershed (for reasons cited below). The economic response to conservation tillage is generally positive for cereals (wheat, barley and oats combined) but is negative for canola (Table 1). This economic analysis is based on nine years (1998-2006) of monitoring the tillage and cropping operations for all 357 fields on some 40 farming operations with at least a portion of their land located within the watershed. Cultivated fields range from 200 ha (500 acres) to only a few hectares, with the average being 18 ha (45 acres).

Reports show that sorbitol-fermenting (SF) Escherichia coli O157 isolates are implicated in animal and human diseases and may represent new emerging pathogens. We investigated the cytotoxicity and interaction with intestinal tissues of an SF, Shiga-toxin-negative E. coli O157:NM isolate. This bovine isolate was negative for stx genes and was not cytotoxic for Vero cells. We found that this E. coli O157 isolate possesses an intimin of type β, whereas the translocated intimin receptor Tir and type III secretion system components EspA, EspB, and EspD were of type α. In contrast, Shiga-toxin-positive O157:H7 isolates usually possess variants of type γ. The isolate did not present typical O157:H7 attaching and effacing lesions in the newborn pig ileal in vitro organ culture model. However, extensive effacement and elongation of the microvilli were observed. In vitro organ culture results suggest that such an SF, Shiga-toxin-negative O157:NM isolate found in cattle may potentially cause disease, such as diarrhea without hemolytic uremic syndrome, in humans.

Plant herbivores often stimulate lignin deposition in injured plant tissue, but it is not known whether corn (Zea mays L.) reacts to European corn borer (ECB, Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner) injury in this manner. Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) genetic modification is also reported to affect lignin in corn. This study evaluated the effects of ECB injury and the Bt gene on the chemical composition and decomposition of corn tissues. Eight near isolines (Bt and NBt) were grown in pots and half were infested with ECB. The experiment was repeated in 2 years. ECB injury increased the lignin concentration in corn leaves in one of 2 years and lowered the C:N ratio in injured stems. Lignin concentration in leaves was greater in Bt than NBt corn in 1 year and Bt stems had greater N concentration than NBt stems in 1 year of the 2 year study. ECB injury affected the composition of lignin-derived phenols, however ECB infested and non-infested stems lost the same amount of mass after 5 months in buried field litterbags. In conclusion ECB injury and the Bt gene had subtle effects on the chemical composition of corn tissue, which did not alter the short-term decomposition of corn residues.

Baker’s yeast is a key ingredient for bread and, on the long term, changes in its manufacturing process had a major impact on the baking industry. As shown by a review of 236 patents filed between 1900 and 2009, the development of suitable growth media for baker’s yeast was critical to improve its acceptability by the baking industry mainly through reduced cost and improved appearance (pale color). Based on the abandon of patenting activity on artisan yeast production in dough, acceptable commercial baker’s yeast appeared on the North American market around 1920, but probably 5 to 15 y earlier in Europe partly because German inventors were the most active to develop growth media for baker’s yeast. During the same period, grain-based media were replaced by diluted molasses that was cheaper. In the following 20 y, inventors put much energy on molasses clarification and miscellaneous sources of nitrogen to supplement it. Although molasses remains the basic raw material for baker’s yeast manufacturing, alternatives are still sought for this application. In the early patent literature, cases were found where several inventors claimed intellectual property rights for the same invention described in patents filed in different countries and languages, which suggests that only thorough reading of patent specifications may distinguish inventorship from licenses and thus truly estimate patenting activity.
