Der Zen Buddhismus, genommen von der Ch'an Schule, wurde zum Samuraigericht bei Kamakura 1191 eingeführt. Seine strenge Geistes- und körperliche Disziplin war zu den Soldaten attraktiv. Honen und Shinran Buddhismus waren Massenkulte, die den Personen Eingang zu einem himmlischen Paradies versprachen, die den Namen des bodhisattva Amida wiederholten.
