Many urban plan­ners are pin­ning high hopes on the freight bi­cycle as one of the key means of urban trans­port­a­tion in the fu­ture. Some pi­on­eer­ing ini­ti­at­ives have star­ted to bring these cargo bikes to the streets in Vi­enna. Up to now, however, it has been un­clear which lo­gist­ics solu­tions are best suited to in­di­vidual cit­ies and which role freight bi­cycles play in these ap­proaches. One of the main prob­lems is how to best syn­chron­ize trucks and freight bi­cycles in bimodal lo­gist­ics. Now the work of Assist­ant Pro­fessor Vera Hem­mel­mayr from WU’s In­sti­tute for Trans­port and Lo­gist­ics Man­age­ment provides answers to this prob­lem for the first time. To­gether with her col­leagues Al­ex­an­dra An­der­luh (WU) and Pamela Nolz (AIT), Vera Hem­mel­mayr has developed an al­gorithm designed to tackle these chal­lenges.

WU’s Gender Policy staff unit is located in the Rector’s Of­fice. As defined in the Aus­trian Uni­versit­ies Act 2002, its func­tion is to co­ordin­ate all tasks and pro­cesses re­lated to equal op­por­tun­it­ies and the ad­vance­ment of wo­men and to con­trib­ute to WU’s ex­ist­ing activ­it­ies for pro­mot­ing gender equal­ity. The re­spons­ib­il­it­ies of the Gender Policy staff unit in­clude ad­vising the Rector’s Coun­cil on meas­ures for pro­mot­ing equal op­por­tun­it­ies and gender equal­ity at WU, devel­op­ing con­cepts for the im­ple­ment­a­tion of such meas­ures, and evalu­at­ing the steps taken. The unit is also re­spons­ible for draw­ing up the WU Equal Op­por­tun­it­ies Re­port. The unit’s primary ob­ject­ive is to raise aware­ness for equal op­por­tun­ity is­sues among WU’s fac­ulty and staff and to work to­wards achiev­ing gender equal­ity at WU, espe­cially in areas where gender im­bal­ances are par­tic­u­larly strong.

In this area of re­search we cover the de­mand side of sus­tain­able devel­op­ment by ana­lyz­ing needs, pat­terns of con­sump­tion and mar­ket devel­op­ments. Since pat­terns of con­sump­tion can be shaped not only by eco­nomic but also by so­cial and en­vir­on­mental factors, sus­tain­able con­sump­tion re­lies on edu­ca­tion, in­form­a­tion and aware­ness. In our re­search pro­jects we com­bine the con­cept of a sus­tain­able life­style with so­cial science con­cepts such as needs. We ana­lyse the im­pact of in­form­a­tion, of edu­ca­tional ini­ti­at­ives and of pro­duct la­belling, and we ex­plore ways in which en­vir­on­ment­ally-­friendly products can find their way out of the eco­lo­gical niche into the mar­ket of mass pro­duc­tion.

Nils Löhndorf, born in Ger­many, is an assist­ant pro­fessor at WU’s In­sti­tute for Pro­duc­tion Man­age­ment. Löhndorf’s work at WU fo­cuses on stochastic op­tim­iz­a­tion and its ap­plic­a­tion to mod­els and meth­ods for ef­fi­cient en­ergy stor­age man­age­ment and op­er­a­tion. Löhndorf re­ceived his doc­tor­ate from the Uni­versity of Vi­enna in 2011 for his dis­ser­ta­tion on the op­tim­iz­a­tion of stochastic-­dy­namic de­cision-­mak­ing pro­cesses, and was presen­ted with the 2014 WU Best Pa­per Award for his pub­lished re­search on op­tim­iz­ing trad­ing de­cisions for hy­dro stor­age sys­tems.

Re­search­ers at the In­sti­tute for Mul­ti-­Level Gov­ernance and Devel­op­ment are in­volved in nu­mer­ous aspects of dif­fer­ent re­search areas.  The In­sti­tute’s mul­ti-­level ana­lyses fo­cus on a vari­ety of global is­sues, from the Transat­lantic Trade and In­vest­ment Part­ner­ship (TTIP) and in­ter­na­tional fin­an­cial sys­tems to biod­iversity and hu­man-in­duced cli­mate change. Often­times, they have to ini­ti­ate changes in cor­por­ate strategy to ad­apt to ex­ternal changes, and, as a con­sequence, re­align struc­tures, sys­tems, and pro­cesses. In our re­search, we ex­am­ine stra­tegic dy­nam­ics and change pro­cesses that en­hance long-term firm per­form­ance as well as or­gan­iz­a­tional designs that sup­port cor­por­ate growth. In our re­search we fo­cus on dif­fer­ent in­ter­faces: between in­nov­a­tion policies and cor­por­ate in­nov­a­tion strategies, between new tech­no­lo­gies and their embed­ding into so­ci­etal in­nov­a­tion, between R&D and up­take of new tech­no­lo­gies. This mul­tidiscip­lin­ary re­search pro­ject, which is fun­ded by the Aus­trian Re­search Pro­mo­tion Agency (FFG), aims at devel­op­ing an ori­ent­a­tion frame­work for the gov­ernance of en­ergy re­lated trans­form­a­tion pro­cesses in urban neigh­bour­hoods. To this end, the pro­ject aims at legal and so­cioeco­nomic para­met­ers. This ap­proach is ap­plied to two neigh­bour­hoods in the city of Linz, for both of which an im­ple­ment­a­tion path (a roadmap) is drawn up. The team of the Re­search In­sti­tute for Urban Man­age­ment and Gov­ernance ana­lyses legal foot­ing and av­en­ues for devel­op­ing (fur­ther) legal in­stru­ments to be used in en­ergy and re­source ef­fi­cient urban devel­op­ment in ex­ist­ing neigh­bour­hoods. A num­ber of legal in­stru­ments and their in­ter­ac­tion are ana­lysed: in ad­di­tion to build­ing and spa­tial plan­ning law, the pro­ject fo­cuses on en­ergy law, state fund­ing and con­nec­tions to hous­ing and ten­ancy law. In ad­di­tion, the pro­ject ana­lyses in how far lessons from in­ter­na­tional examples may be ap­plic­able in the Aus­trian con­text and whether and how such in­stru­ments could be fur­ther developed in the fu­ture.
