The shrimp is a hermaphrodite species, i.e., it possesses the reproductive organs of both sexes, which are expressed one after the other. After first attaining sexual maturity as a male, the shrimp undergoes a sex change during a short transitory period at the age of four or five and then spends the rest of its life as a female. Larger than the males, female shrimp are greatly prized by fishers and are thus more likely to be seen in retail outlets.
