Principalement organique, l’azote (N) dans le sol est seulement disponible pour les cultures après sa minéralisation en N inorganique par l’action microbienne ou enzymatique. Dans le but de mettre au point une analyse de sol pour guider les applications de N, il est nécessaire de prévoir la quantité relative de N organique qui sera minéralisée durant une saison de croissance. Pour ce faire, plusieurs méthodes d’analyse chimique proposées dans la littérature pour mesurer le N minéralisable ont été examinées en termes d’interaction chimique, de précision des mesures, de réponse aux modifications des procédures et de capacité à distinguer les différences entre les sols. Les analyses chimiques examinées comportaient diverses hydrolyses acides ou alcalines et mesuraient, par distillation à la vapeur et par diffusion manuelle ou automatique, la quantité d’azote ammoniacal inorganique résultante. Un précipité gélatineux dans la solution d’hydrolyse d’acide chlorhydrique 6 M filtrée et neutralisée a nui à la diffusion d’oxyde de magnésium, qui servait généralement à mesurer l’azote ammoniacal inorganique. Le retrait du précipité a semblé résoudre ce problème. Cependant, le précipité n’a pas semblé interférer avec la diffusion d’hydroxyde de sodium. L’hydrolyse d’acide chlorhydrique 6 M a permis d’extraire de 34 à 103 % d’ammonium fixé sur argile se trouvant dans le sol. La distillation à la vapeur s’est avérée une solution de remplacement acceptable à la diffusion pour mesurer le N labile en milieu NaOH. La rigueur des conditions de mesure a entraîné des différences en ce qui a trait aux résultats, ce qui indique que des conditions précises et reproductibles sont nécessaires. Plusieurs méthodes ont été étroitement corrélées (r2 > 0,62) avec l’azote minéralisé durant des incubations en aérobiose et pourraient être utilisées pour effectuer de nouvelles évaluations concernant les analyses de N dans le sol. La présente étude indique que des modifications doivent être apportées à plusieurs méthodes analytiques proposées afin de progresser leur capacité à estimer l’azote minéralisable et, ainsi, formuler des recommandations concernant notamment l’engrais ou d’autres amendements pour les cultures.

De rondleiding werd gestart met een bezoek aan de filter voor de verwijdering van methyleenchloride (biowasfiltratie) in de rubberfabriek van LANXESS in Zwijndrecht, dichtbij Antwerpen. De butylrubber geproduceerd door LANXESS wordt vooral gebruikt in de bandenindustrie. Tijdens het productieproces wordt methyleenchloride uitgestoten, wat in Vlaanderen de waarde van 20 mg/Nm3 (bij een debiet van > 100 g/h) niet mag overschrijden. In samenwerking met TREVI, dat zich specialiseert in water-, lucht-, bodem- en energieoplossingen, werd voor biowasfiltratie gekozen als de best mogelijke technologie om de uitstoot van methyleenchloride te verlagen. Door gebruik te maken van dit soort filter, wordt MeCl biologisch afgebroken tot CO2, H2O en HCl.
