Mi sono divertito un sacco a scattare le foto per questo panorama: mi sono ingegnato a posizionare il treppiede su un enorme tronco galleggiante che, fortunatamente, non si è messo a rollare. Not that we would in all seriousness believe in fateful encounters, but the story behind our first photo shoot with Daniel definitively has something to do with good karma. Don't worry, we won't bore you with excessive background information, but so much has been said. With his enthusiasm for natural lighting conditions and a perfect eye for genuinely emotional moments (not to mention his weakness for expressive appearances on the dance floor), Daniel is the photographic personification of the Jaz philosophy and therefore, from day one, a member of the family. The same of course applies for Peach, Daniel's top model, best camera assistant ever and exemplary bulldog.

I cannot imagine how people lived before the invention of the computer, I am convinced that I was born in the right century! My name is Daniel Griza, I am sixteen years old and Edelweiss Foundation’s ambassador. This year I have got the maximum score and the first place at Republican Computer Science Olympiad. I have also brought home several gold and silver medals from national and international competitions. But I am very proud of the medal won at Clock Tower School Romania 2012 contest, where I competed with dedicated IT teams from countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Romania, which are much more developed in training for Olympics in IT.

Anul acesta am obţinut şi locul I şi punctajul maxim la olimpiada republicană de informatică, am şi mai multe medalii de aur şi argint câştigate la competiţii naţionale şi internaţionale. Ţin însă foarte mult la o medalie câştigată la concursul Clock Tower School Romania 2012, unde am concurat cu echipe consacrate în IT din ţări precum Indonezia, Filipine, Bulgaria, România, care au un nivel mult mai dezvoltat în pregătirea olimpicilor în domeniul IT.

В этом году я выиграл первое место на республиканской олимпиаде знаний, получив максимальный балл по информатике, а также выиграл несколько золотых и серебряных медалей, участвуя на национальных и международных конкурсах. Больше всего я дорожу медалью, которую выиграл на конкурсе Clock Tower School Romania 2012, где я соревновался с лучшими ИТ-командами из Индонезии, Филиппин, Болгарии, Румынии, стран, в которых уровень подготовки олимпийцев по информатике намного выше.

In any case, the fact that they let him carry out his performance nonetheless testifies to a certain degree of trust; along with munificence, this is another concept the artist gives special credence to in his work. Trust also plays a key role when the buyer of Yavuzsoy's lined paper drawings has to promise the artist to give them to anyone else who, upon seeing them, says they would also like to have one: a generous act in which Yavuzsoy calls the circulation of art goods into question. Since 2004, he has been creating the lined sheets of paper that strictly adhere to the DIN (German industry standard) norm of industrially manufactured writing paper. The artist draws his straight lines on white paper on an almost daily basis-freehand, but with an underlying "model" to go by-until the pencil he is using is depleted. The resulting drawing is the product of a machine-like virtuosity, without ever quite being able to attain to the industrial norm. But Yavuzsoy explains that he is not concerned with the idea of artist as machine: "People can always see that the paper is drawn by hand." What fascinates him more is the endlessness of the self-appointed task, in a state of dissolution and approaching the inexhaustible.

Ein generöser Akt, mit dem Yavuzsoy den Warenkreislauf der Kunst in Frage stellt. Seit 2004 produziert er jene linierten Blätter, die sich streng an die DIN-Norm von industriell hergestelltem Briefpapier anlehnen. Fast täglich zieht der Künstler freihändig, jedoch mit einem unterliegenden "Model" gerade Linien über weiße Blätter - solange bis sich der von ihm benutzte Stift erschöpft hat. Das Ergebnis ist eine Zeichnung, die das Ergebnis einer maschinenartigen Virtuosität ist, ohne die industrielle Norm je ganz erreichen zu können. Um den Künstler als Maschine gehe es ihm hierbei jedoch nicht, erklärt Yavuzsoy: "Man wird immer erkennen, dass das Blatt von Hand gezeichnet ist." Was ihn hingegen fasziniert, ist die Endlosigkeit der selbst gewählten Aufgabe "die in sich gelöst", also tendenziell unerschöpflich ist.

When entering Arboran, the first impression a wanderer gets is a truly majestic one. A grand victory square lies right in front of a mighty city whose towers rise high into the clouds. There are houses upon houses in narrow streets, and everywhere there are merchants peddling their wares — nobody would ever think for a minute that half of the city had been annihilated in a devastating natural catastrophe. However, if you follow the course of the Moy waterfall past the large cliff and the deep gorge, you will notice numerous houses that have been buried and which were destroyed. One can only imagine the magnitude of the wrath that must have rained down back then.

Man kann sich nur vorstellen, welche Pracht dort dereinst geherrscht hat.

You have to be able to sell your work to support an operation such as I have set up. Because you don’t make things to sell, and yet you make things to sell. I would just like to make that distinction, that you don’t change your work in order to make it sellable, but you do make the work in order so that you can sell it, so that you can continue your work because everyone has to live in reality. And the reality of things is that there isn’t a grant big enough in all of North America to keep me going for one year. At the rate that I spend money running a foundry, running this operation, there isn’t one… a Canada Council Grant is not much money - $30,000? That would keep my operation going for a month, so what can I do? I have to sell, but I don’t compromise my work to sell it because I know fundamentally that the way to sell work is not to compromise. If you compromise people won’t buy it, it’s a simple business thing.

Parce qu’on ne fait pas des oeuvres pour les vendre, et pourtant on fait des oeuvres pour les vendre. Je voudrais simplement faire cette distinction, qu’on ne change pas son art pour le rendre vendable, mais qu’on fait quand même son oeuvre pour pouvoir la vendre, pour pouvoir continuer son travail parce que tout le monde doit survivre en réalité. Et la réalité des choses est qu’il n’y a pas une seule bourse qui soit assez substantielle en Amérique du Nord pour me soutenir pendant une année entière. Au rythme où je dépense de l’argent pour opérer ma fonderie, il n’y en a pas une... une bourse du Conseil des arts du Canada, c’est peu d’argent – 30,000$? Ça me permettrait de continuer mon opération pendant un mois, alors que dois-je faire? Je dois vendre, mais je ne compromets pas mes oeuvres pour les vendre, parce que je sais fondamentalement que la meilleure façon de vendre ses oeuvres est de ne pas se compromettre. Si vous compromettez votre art, les gens n’achèteront pas, c’est une simple question d’affaires.

Étant un biologiste qui s’intéresse au comportement des animaux de l’Arctique, je passe souvent de longues heures à surveiller des mammifères et à noter leurs agissements. Par contre, je suis surtout habitué à observer les ours blancs sur terre. Mon expérience précédente se limitait à la station de recherche du Musée canadien de la nature sur Bathurst Island, laquelle est située sur une corniche qui surplombe la Polar Bear Pass, une large vallée à végétation dense où habitent le boeuf musqué, le caribou et plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux nicheurs. Nous y voyions surtout des ours blancs solitaires traverser l’île environ une fois par mois, et de loin. Ils fouillaient des carcasses de boeufs musqués morts, chassaient le caribou, poursuivaient les lemmings dans la neige et dormaient pendant plusieurs heures. Étant donné que nous ne portions jamais d’armes à feu, nous nous inquiétions toujours à leur sujet, certains chercheurs ayant même vécu des incidents traumatisants en présence d’ours dans le camp ou sur le terrain.

Not very gently he was pushed down the worn-out steps into the moist dungeon. He was tied up in rusty chains that cut into his wrists and so he stumbled and crashed against the wet wall that was losing its plaster and where mold had formed. Unfortunately he fell down the steps and bloodied his forehead and banged up his shin. Warm liquid dripped over his right eye. Painstakingly he got up. With heavy, echoing steps the two guards followed behind him. One, a dwarf with a harsh face, carried a torch that illuminated his ugly features consisting of disgusting eyes, nose, mouth and forehead in a pale light. The other was tall and strong and hit his callous palms with the shaft of a whip. He grinned viciously and a mouth with gaps and yellow teeth appeared. "Go on!" he barked in a thunderous voice and pushed the shaft of the whip into the prisoner's back so that he stumbled and fell again. This time a massive door made of oak stopped the fall. Almost unconscious he stayed down and stared at cob webs. Something hurried across his hand with a squeal. Then the tall one put him on his feet and the dwarf opened the door. Immediately, stinking, stale air hit his nose. He wondered what was expecting him behind this door, way below ground. If only he could climb up the stairs again towards the light. Did he have to go down into this endless dungeon that held him prisoner. He didn't even remember anything before. "Light! Only light!". He moved along the stony floor. The dwarf put the torch into a holder and a rectangular room with an arched ceiling from which water was dripping, was illuminated. Various devices and tools were arranged along the walls and hung from the ceiling. In the center there was some sort of bed with curious features. The floor was slightly tilted towards the center so that any kind of liquids would flow there and disappear in a gutter.

Er war mit rostigen Ketten gefesselt, die ihm in die Handgelenke schnitten und so stolperte er und prallte gegen die nassglänzende Wand, an der der Verputz abbröckelte und sich Kalk gebildet hatte. Unglücklicherweise schlug er sich die Stirn blutig und das Schienbein an einer Treppenstufe blau. Warme Flüssigkeit triefte über sein rechtes Auge. Mühselig rappelte er sich auf. Mit schweren, widerhallenden Schritten kamen seine beiden Wächter hinter ihm herab. Der eine, ein kleiner Wicht mit grobem Gesicht, trug eine Fackel, die sein abstossendes Gebilde aus Augen, Nase, Mund und Stirn in einem bleichen Licht erschienen liess. Der zweite war gross und muskulös und schlug sich mit dem Stiel einer Peitsche auf die schwielige Händefläche. Er grinste hämisch und Mund mit Lücken und einigen gelben Zähnen kam zum Vorschein. "Geh schon!" donnerte er und stiess ihn mit dem Peitschenstiel in den Rücken, dass er ein weiteres Mal fiel. Diesmal stoppte einige massive Eichentür den Fall. Benommen blieb er liegen und starrte in ein staubverhangenes Spinnennetz. Etwa huschte piepsend über seine Hand. Dann stellte der Grosse ihn auf die Füsse und der Zwerg öffnete die knarrende Tür. Sofort ging ihm stinkende, abgestandene Luft in die Nase. Er fragte sich, was ihn hinter dieser Tür erwarten würde, weit unter der Erde. Könnte er doch noch einmal die Treppe nach oben steigen, wo es hell sein würde. Musste er denn diesen unendlichen Weg in dieses Gewölbe gehen, in dem er sich verfangen hatte. Er wusste nicht einmal mehr, was vorher war. "Licht! Nur Licht!". Er bewegte sich auf steinernem Boden. Der Zwerg steckte die Fackel in eine Halterung und ein rechteckiger Raum mit gewölbter Decke, von der Wasser tropfte, wurde ausgeleuchtet. Verschiedene Geräte und Werkzeuge waren an die Wand gestellt und aufgehängt. In der Mitte stand eine Art Liege aus Holz mit seltsamen Vorrichtungen dran. Der Boden war zur Mitte leicht gesenkt, so dass irgendwelche Flüssigkeiten wohl in die Mitte fliessen und in einem Ablaufrohr verschwinden würden.
