C’est en 1988 que le pape Jean-Paul II a publié l’Exhortation apostolique Christifideles Laici dans laquelle le rôle des laïcs à l’intérieur de l’Église catholique a été sollicité. «Par cette Exhortation, nous voulons inviter encore une fois les fidèles laïcs à relire, à méditer et à assimiler avec intelligence et amour l’enseignement si fécond et si riche du Concile qui touche à leur participation à la triple fonction du Christ»: sacerdotal, prophétique et royal. Era il 1988 quando Giovanni Paolo II pubblicava l’esortazione apostolica Christifideles Laici nella quale il ruolo dei laici all’interno della Chiesa Cattolica veniva sollecitato. «Con questa Esortazione i fedeli laici sono invitati ancora una volta a rileggere, a meditare e ad assimilare con intelligenza e con amore il ricco e fecondo insegnamento del Concilio circa la loro partecipazione al triplice ufficio di Cristo»: sacerdotale, profetico e regale.
