Des del punt de vista dels aspectes merament científics, resultava fàcil la identificació de tres àrees d’investigació perfectament delimitades : Química, Biologia i Biomedicina. Després d’alguns anys, el 1996, aquestes àrees es transformaven en Instituts, conformant les dues següents unitats : l’Institut de Biologia Molecular de Barcelona (IBMB) i l’Institut d’Investigacions Químiques i Ambientals de Barcelona ‘Josep Pascual Vila ‘ (IIQAB), totes dues amb seu a les instal.lacions del CID. Per contra, l’àrea de Biomedicina va constituir l’Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques de Barcelona (IIBB) i efectuar el seu trasllat a les instal.lacions de l’Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, mentre que el Centre d’Investigació Cardiovascular (CIC) va canviar la seva seu a un dels acabats renovats pavellons modernistes de l’Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau de Barcelona.
