De l’extérieur, ce volume laisse deviner une intériorité mystérieuse, changeant selon les lumières nocturnes ou diurnes. C’est un territoire de contrastes, de surprises, un dédale spatial, un paysage s’articulant entre des cours et des terrasses extérieures diversement plantées. À l’intérieur, des espaces publics piranésiens relient les différentes salles, le foyer, la rue. Les façades forment des filtres légers laissant voir la ville au lointain, le parc, les architectures voisines…  la nuit, elles sont autant de supports diffusant des images colorées projetées, imprimées sur le verre. L’abstraction est envahie par la figuration, le permanent complété par l’éphémère.

"Die Ausstellung Picturing America zieht den Besucher wie mit Zauberschlag in eine andere Welt - fernab von Märzwetter und Krisenticker", schreibt Jens Bisky in der Süddeutschen Zeitung. Die Kritikerdebatten um den Fotorealismus sollten "den Besucher dieser ungeheuer amüsanten Ausstellung nicht kümmern. Ein Meisterwerk wie Richard Estes Telephone Booths, 1967, bedarf keiner theoretischen Krücken (.) - es schlägt den, der Augen hat, sich des Lichts zu erfreuen, unmittelbar in den Bann." Die Gemälde der Fotorealisten "locken den Betrachter in ein Labyrinth aus Natur und Kunst, Wirklichkeit und Schein, in einen Irrgarten des Glanzes und der Spiegelungen, in dem man sich höchst vergnügt verlieren kann." In der Berliner Zeitung zieht Jennifer Allen Parallelen zwischen der Entstehungszeit der fotorealistischen Arbeiten und heute. "Das Timing hätte nicht besser sein können. Die neue Ausstellung im Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin wirkt ganz zeitgemäß, so, als ob die Wirtschaftkrise nicht nur die täglichen Nachrichten beherrschte, sondern auch ihre eigene Geschichte thematisieren wolle, (.) die Zeit, als Ölkrise, Terrorismus und Disco den Takt bestimmten. Und wie heute waren die USA damals in einen aussichtslosen Krieg verstrickt." Auch für Gabriela Walde von der Berliner Morgenpost besitzen die Werke der Fotorealisten eine "irritierende Aktualität, eine ungewollt ironische Note und ungemein hellseherische Kraft: die US-Ikonen - wie das Kultobjekt Auto - wanken."
