Actualmente, quase todos os documentos fotograficos estão sendo guardadas nas embalagens originais (caixas de cartão e de metal). O conjunto - devido à idade avançada - está em mau estado. Algumas peças são severamente ameaçada pela decadência.

The glass plate collection of the Ibero-American Institute contains a portfolio of photographic documents of different types and origins from the period between about 1870 and 1940. It consists of over 9,300 images, including about 6,200 glass-negative-plates, 2,100 glass-sildes (some colored) and 1,000 large-format sheet film negatives. Currently, the images are stored almost exclusively in the original packaging (cardboard- and metal-boxes). The collection is due to old age in a poor state and parts of it are acutely threatened by decay. The importance and the scientific value of the glass plate collection of the IAI are derived from their size, the prominent origin and the unique composition of the material. The collection includes rare and for the most part unpublished visual documents about archaeological, ethnographic, historical and regional issues of Latin America. In addition, the valuable documents represent unique visual sources on the activities of the pioneers of Latin American Studies. The glass plate collection includes images of expeditions and research topics of some of the most important German-speaking scientists in American archaeology (Walter Lehmann, Teobert Maler Eduard Seler, Max Uhle), Ethnology (Paul Ehrenreich, William Kissenberth, Robert Lehmann-Nitsche) and geography (Hans Steffen ) as well as images of regional and propagandistic depiction of Brazil (Guilherme Gaelzer-Neto).

Die Glasplattensammlung des Ibero-Amerikanischen Instituts umfasst einen Bestand von Bilddokumenten unterschiedlicher Art und Provenienz aus der Zeit zwischen ca. 1870 und 1940. Sie besteht aus über 9.300 Bildträgern, darunter ungefähr 6.200 Glasnegative, 2.100 Glasdiapositive (z.T. koloriert) und 1.000 großformatige Planfilmnegative. Derzeit werden die Bildträger fast ausschließlich in den originalen Umverpackungen (Papp- und Metallschachteln) aufbewahrt. Der Bestand befindet sich aufgrund seines hohen Alters in einem schlechten Erhaltungszustand und Teile der Sammlung sind akut vom Zerfall bedroht. Die Bedeutung und der spezielle wissenschaftliche Wert der Glasplattensammlung des IAI ergeben sich aus deren Umfang, der prominenten Herkunft und der einzigartigen Zusammensetzung des Materials. Die Sammlung umfasst seltene, zum Großteil unveröffentlichte Bildquellen zu archäologischen, ethnographischen, historischen und länderkundlichen Themen Lateinamerikas. Darüber hinaus stellen die wertvollen Bilddokumente einzigartige visuelle Informationsquellen zur Tätigkeit von Pionieren der Lateinamerikaforschung dar. In der Glasplattensammlung befinden sich ebenso Bilddokumente von Expeditionen und Forschungsgegenständen einiger der bedeutendsten Forscher der deutschsprachigen Altamerikanistik (Walter Lehmann, Teobert Maler, Eduard Seler, Max Uhle), Ethnologie (Paul Ehrenreich, Wilhelm Kissenberth, Robert Lehmann-Nitsche) und Geografie (Hans Steffen) wie auch der länderkundlichen und propagandistischen Darstellung Brasiliens (Guilherme Gaelzer-Neto).

La colección de placas de vidrio del Instituto Ibero-Americano abarca un fondo de documentos fotográficos de distintos tipos y procedencias diversas del periodo entre c.1870 y 1940. Contiene más de 9.300 imagens de diferentes materiales, entre ellas aproximadamente 6.200 negativos de vidrio, 2.100 diapositivas de vidrio (en parte coloradas) y 1.000 negativos sobre celuloide de gran tamaño. Actualmente los soportes fotográficos se conservan casi exclusivamente en sus estuches originales (cajas de cartón o de metal). Su vetustez determina que se hallen en mal estado de conservación y que parte de la colección corra serio peligro de desintegrarse. La colección de placas fotográficas del IAI es tan importante y de un valor científico tan particular debido a sus dimensiones, sus muy destacados orígenes y su composición única. La colección de placas de vidrio incluye documentos fotográficos raros y en gran parte inéditos acerca de temáticas arqueológicas, etnográficas e históricas de América Latina. Los documentos fotográficos representan fuentes visuales de información de valor único sobre las tareas de los pioneros de la investigación sobre América Latina. Así la colección contiene tal documentos fotográficos de expediciones y utensilios de investigación de algunos de los investigadores más destacados de la Antropología y Arqueología de las Américas (Walter Lehmann, Teobert Maler, Eduard Seler, Max Uhle), la etnología (Paul Ehrenreich, Wilhelm Kissenberth, Robert Lehmann-Nitsche) y la geografía (Hans Steffen), como también el legado de Guilherme Gaelzer-Neto. Ese indica la representación corográfica y propagandística de Brasil.
