  Madera modular - Arquit...
The completion in London in 2008 of an eight-floor block using cross laminated timber pieces represented a milestone in the gradual comeback of wood as a widely used architectural material. Other such projects were quick to follow suit, setting in motion a process that has culminated with Forté, the apartment building in the city of Melbourne which with its nine stories holds the current world record for tallest wooden construction. Here in Spain, in turn, in the historic quarter of Lérida, a six-level housing development has recently been carried out with solid chunks of cross laminated timber (see
Last Chile. Like other aspects of Chilean cultural life, the architecture emerging after the dense parentheses of the dictatorship is the result of a peaceful and slow transition. After the assimilation of the theoretical Latin American debate on ‘appropriate modernity’ and the weakening of the postmodern style imported from the other America, the production of the last decade shows a balance between tradition and avant-garde that is not related with the nostalgia for the past or the euphoria toward the new, but rather with the capacity of architects to enter into a creative dialogue with their own circumstances.
Solar time is not the time of the solar house: it is the time of the slow city. Indeed, solar houses as those gathered in Madrid for the first Solar Decathlon in Europe are useful platforms for innovation, and fertile grounds for technological competition among universities, stimulating among young architects and engineers the entrepreneurial spirit and the interest in scientific experiment, backed by the strict control of results. However, the fruits of this collective effort should not be used to marginally improve the energy behavior of the single-family houses in the sprawling city generated by the automobile, but to improve the already very efficient compact city, which can afford to be slow when its scale does not demand yielding to the insomniac flow of traffic. The solar house is not a laboratory for the house of the future, but a testing ground for cities without detached houses, and new experiences of urban sustainability all speak the language of density.
  LUZ DE LEVANTE - Arquit...
But the wind is changing course. A new generation of architects is creating a fertile panorama of works and projects able to engage in dialogue, free of complexes, with the imported architectures abounding in the region. The disciplined laconism of Valencia and Alicante architects contrasts with the diversity of languages used by the invited voices. Nevertheless, perhaps only with a deliberate stripping and a rigorous silence can they strike a conversation with the babel of artistic tongues being heard on the shores of the Mediterranean. If the communication works, these lands will have enough fuel to kindle the bonfires of architecture, turning fervor into brilliance, and complementing the flames of artifice with the slow fireworks of everyday heat.
