  Altopascio - Nel nome d...
Its establishment is unknown but it is well-known that since the Middle Ages, the Spedale di Altopascio has welcomed crowds of pilgrims traveling along the Via Francigena. For sure we know that it existed in 1084 and that the order of friars that oversaw it adopted the Tau as their symbol, the Greek letter which recalled the pilgrim’s staff and also alluded to the cross. The Spedale soon grew, and on April 5, 1239, Pope Gregory IX bestowed the Rule upon the Tau friars, making them a religious order.
  Seravezza - Seravezza. ...
Seravezza is at the heart of that enchanted part of Tuscany, which in 1513, according to the wishes of Giovanni de’ Medici, or Pope Leo X, removed itself from Lucca’s holdings for more than three centuries, becoming part of the glory of the Florentine State. The so-called Versilia Medicea, to which the communities of Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi and Stazzema also belong. A land of great charm that, from the beaches of the Tyrrhenian climb up to the peaks of the Apuan Alps, home to the treasure of natural, artistic and historical wonders.
  Altopascio - Nel nome d...
Since 1280, the Altopascio bell tower has stood tall at 51 meters, serving as a sign of hope and solace to pilgrims, comforted also by the tolls of the Smarrita, the bell commissioned by Lazzaro Saggina in 1325. But since the end of the 1300s, its memory has been lost in an Altopascio besieged again and again due to their clashes with Florence, Pisa and Lucca. Even the Spedale suffered from the crisis that assailed the small town, and in 1459, the order of the Hospitallers was suppressed by Pope Pius II. In 1773, the Grand Duke Peter Leopold I definitively closed the Spedale and in Altopascio nothing but 40 small farms remained.

The facade of a beautiful purple converses with the travertine monuments, crimson curtains on the windows, ceilings with zodiac signs and mythological subjects and walls covered with stamped leather the colour of silver and ruby. To lighten the space, we reproduced on some of the walls the color dell’aria so dear to Bernini, the trusted architect of Uncle Fabio and teacher to my architect. In my 36 years as a cardinal, I attended five conclaves without ever becoming Pope. I was always the "Cardinal-Nephew." But in the Roman art world, I am remembered as a generous patron and benefactor, and that’s good enough for me.

  Castiglione d'Orcia - A...
Among the natural white firs and the springs, you find Vivo d’Orcia. The two hermitages make their presence felt: San Pietro, in the Cervini area, built on top of the remains of the Camaldolese monastery by Pope Marcel II, and the superior hermitage of San Benedetto (or Ermicciolo). Here there have always been countless clefts, caves and rocks, regularly occupied by thieves, shepherds and hermits. The most famous of these is the Devil’s Chair, named after the tradition where the demon sat waiting to scare passersby and to confront hermits who were able to oppose him.
As he walks around Pienza the traveller realises that he is somewhere totally different to other towns. The old centre is one of the purest incarnations of the concept of the ideal city thanks to Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who was born in the village of Corsignano in 1405 and who returned to pay it a visit forty years or so later after becoming Pope Pius II. He decided to change the town’s destiny forever, stopping an end to the progressive ruination of his hometown and commissioning its total renewal to one of the best Renaissance architects: Rossellino. This was the rebirth of Pienza, known for the balanced beauty of its architecture and for its harmonious rapport with the surrounding scenery.
