İlgi duydukları mesleğin sunumlarını dinleyen öğrenciler arta kalan zamanlarında ise İEÜ’de merak ettikleri bölümleri gezerek üniversiteli ağabey ve ablalarından bölümler hakkında detaylı bilgi aldı.

The students coming to IUE from 15 schools in İzmir attended “I am Choosing My Profession” days. In the first day, Psychologist Deniz Özer gave a seminar on “My Inner Self on the Way to Success". For two days, the students watched the presentations of 27 Department Heads and academicians from 9 Faculties about the departments. The students who watched the presentation of the profession they were interested in visited IUE departments and received detailed information from their brothers and sisters. Students said that “I am Choosing My Profession" days were very helpful for them in making the most difficult decision of their lives. They said, "The presentations were very detailed and they included important information that we did not pay attention to. Some of us understood that the department we chose was right for us and some of us saw that it was not appropriate. Now, we can make right choices.”

It has been stated that the elderly population was unaware about their legal rights. A survey for people over 65, conducted by lecturers of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) Vocational School of Health Services, revealed that the elderly people have been subject to neglect and abuse in some part of their lives. The study, led by Melahat Kızıl, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services and conducted by Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, Director of Vocational School of Health Services, Lecturer Nursun Üstünkarlı, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Şişli, Lecturer at IUE Faculty of Law, involved residents of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Gürçeşme Nursing Home, who were able to meet their basic needs on their own.

Kızıl stated that contrary to the popular belief the society was aware of calling 112 in an emergency, that this was only true in the case of illnesses, traffic accidents, and heart attacks, etc. The issue of performing first aid is taken lightly by people, said Kızıl. “People have a tendency to help out and they have certain self-confidence when it comes to performing first aid. Some of that knowledge dates back to the school years when they learned about the basics of first aid. They are not aware that the knowledge might be updated or different practices might be performed. 91.5% of folks who participated in our survey claimed that they would call 112 in an emergency, when an emergency situation came up, however, the rate of folks calling 112 reduces to 4%’s in an emergency situation,” said Kızıl.

“Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı tarafından gideceğimiz kente yönelik 5 – 6 okul adı alıyoruz. Bu okulları tek tek arayıp ihtiyaçlarını soruyoruz. En çok ihtiyacı olan okulumuzu belirliyoruz. Diğer okullarımızı da başka projelerimiz için not ediyoruz. 300 kişilik bir kulübüz, her kente 35 kişilik bir ekip olarak gidiyoruz. İlköğretim öğrencilerinin okuyabileceği kitapları belirliyoruz. Her okulumuz için bin kitap alıyoruz. Kütüphaneleri oluştururken palyaço gösterileri, duvar boyama etkinlikleri, öğrencilerle futbol maçı, canlı müzik ve anasınıfı öğrencilerine oyuncak dağıtımı gibi aktiviteler de yapıyoruz. Hedefimiz 81 ildeki en uçlarda kalmış, kimsenin gitmediği köylerde İlgi’siz Öğrenci Kulübü’nün kütüphanesini kurmak.”

“We are told by the Ministry of National Education about 5 – 6 school names in the cities we plan to visit. We contact each of them and find out about their needs. We try to determine the school with the most needs and also take down the names of other schools for other projects. We are a club of 300 students and visit each city in a group of 35 people. We try to determine the books that are suitable for elementary school students. We purchase one thousand books for each school. We are organizing activities as clown shows, wall painting activities, and soccer games with students, live music, and handing out toys to kindergarten students when we visit their schools. Our purpose is to establish a İlgi'siz Student Club library at schools in the remote areas of all 81 cities.”

Young students all around Anatolia will finally be able to have their library thanks to the ‘Yürüyen Kitaplar (Walking Books)’ Project by Izmir University of Economics (IUE) İlgi'siz Student Community. IUE students purchased one thousand books for each school and delivered as part of the project that is funded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and co-supported by the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Students of Izmir Economics, who witnessed the joy of young students in rural schools of Denizli, Gaziantep, Düzce, Amasya, and Samsun until now, are getting ready to establish libraries in Sakarya and Bilecik next week. The club will also be visiting the schools in Bingöl, Elazığ, Diyarbakır, Hakkari, and Şırnak in the near future.

Prof. Dr. Şemin said, “We get sick because of coming in contact with infected blood or body fluids. Washing hands with soap keeps the germs away. Parents should frequently stress the importance of washing hands with soap and water to their children.”

A research titled “Depression in the Elderly Living at Nursing Homes and Assessment on Their Quality of Life” was conducted under the coordination of Melahat Kızıl, Lecturer at Izmir University of Economics Vocational School of Health Services. In addition to Kızıl, Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, Director of IUE Vocational School of Health Services, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Öğçe, Head of IUE Department of Nursing, Lecturer Nursun Üstünkarlı, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gülem Atabay, Head of IUE Department of Health Management participated in the research as well. The research, which included 74 residents of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Gürçeşme Zübeyde Hanım Nursing Home who are 65 and over and are able to meet their basic needs on their own, revealed that 29.8% of them did not have depression, 48.6% had mild, and 21.6% had severe depression.

Prof. Dr. Şemin said, “It is very important for parents and teachers to detect any developmental abnormalities in children who are at risk group in preschool period. Disabled individuals need support on many subjects such as correct prognosis, parents accepting their child's disability, education of disabled child, their adaptation to social life. Among the major problems they face are not being able to benefit from rights in education, health, rehabilitation, and care, and having to deal with poverty for a significant portion of them.”

She said, “Adults needed a minimum of 500 milligrams and maximum of 2 thousand 400 milligrams of sodium daily. Lack of sodium is uncommon since there is enough sodium in food components. Mikroplarla mücadele ve bulaşıcı hastalıkların tedavisi için insanoğlunun kaynaklarının büyük çoğunluğunu harcadığını belirten Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, “Gözle göremediğimiz mikroplardan korunmak, onlarla savaşmaktan daha düşük maliyetlidir. Kaynakları verimli kullanmak için özellikle çocuklarımıza bu alışkanlıkların kazandırılması bir taraftan sağlık harcamalarında azalma ile ülke ekonomisine katkı sağlanmalıdır. Diğer taraftan bireylerin sağlığının korunması toplumun sağlığını geliştirir” dedi.

Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin stated that the humans spent majority of their resources on struggle against germs and treatment of infectious diseases. “Protecting from germs that are not visible to the human eye is cost efficient than fighting against them. Getting our children familiar with these habits contributes to the country’s economy via fewer expenses in health on one hand, and on the other hand, protecting individuals’ health improves the society’s health,” said Şemin.

İEÜ Sağlık Hizmetleri Meslek Yüksekokulu Müdürü Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin de, Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu verilerine göre 2012 yılında 65 ve yukarı yaştaki nüfus oranın yüzde 7.5 olduğu, bu rakamların 2023 yılında yüzde 10.2’ye ulaşmasının beklendiğini söyledi.

Prof. Dr. İlgi Şemin, Director of IUE Vocational School of Health Services, stated that based on the data provided by Turkish Statistical Institute, population ages 65 and over was 7.5% in 2012, and that number was expected to reach 10.2% in 2013. Prof. Dr. Şemin said, “In addition to the requirement for elderly people benefitting from health services more, their need for help to maintain mental and social health also increase.”
