The pair of British artists, Jon Thomson and Alison Craighead, style their 2007 video, »Flat Earth«, as a »desktop documentary«. The work is based on intensive image and text research conducted in the World Wide Web, in which the two artists pull together material from the most diverse of internet sources. Using motifs from image data banks or spoken blog entries from all over the world, they weave fragmented reports on catastrophes, personal commentaries and global events, brought to the attention of the audience by means of a virtual tour around the world. Thomson and Craighead make use of the potential and the tools of Web 2.0 – such as a function of Google Earth, which gives you a satellite view of Earth in order to then zoom in on any destination on its surface. Places and stories change spasmodically. Viewers are plunged into the information flood that is the World Wide Web via a series of snapshots where they hear and see glimpses of personal stories, only to shift perspective a moment later. The voices of the innumerable cultural producers and agents, who make known their opinions and experiences in the internet, generate the narratives. The video reflects this digital communication in a globalised world. In »Flat Earth«, the world on our desktops has become a disc again, on which our journeys are solely virtual ones, and other places and countries seem only a few mouseclicks away.

Als »Desktop-Dokumentarfilm« bezeichnet das britische Künstlerduo Jon Thomson und Alison Craighead ihr Video Flat Earth von 2007. Die Arbeit basiert auf einer intensiven Bild- und Textrecherche im World Wide Web, in welcher die beiden Künstler Materialien aus unterschiedlichsten Quellen im Internet zusammen getragen haben. Motive aus Bild-Datenbanken oder gesprochene Blogeinträge von Netzusern aus aller Welt verweben die beiden zu fragmentarischen Berichten von Katastrophen, persönlichen Kommentaren und Ereignissen rund um den Globus, von denen der Betrachter auf einer virtuellen Weltreise erfährt. Thomson und Craighead nutzen die Möglichkeiten und Werkzeuge des Web 2.0 – beispielsweise die Funktion von Google Earth, mit deren Hilfe man die Welt aus der Satellitenperspektive betrachten kann, um dann an beliebigen Orten wieder an die Erdoberfläche heranzuzoomen. Sprunghaft wechseln die Orte und die Geschichten. In Momentaufnahmen taucht der Betrachter in die Informationsflut des World Wide Web ein, hört und sieht persönliche Geschichten, um im nächsten Moment schon wieder den Schauplatz zu wechseln. Die Erzählungen werden anhand der unzähligen Stimmen kultureller Produzenten und Akteure generiert, die im Internet ihre Meinungen und Erlebnisse kundtun. Das Video reflektiert diese digitale Kommunikation in einer globalisierten Welt. In »Flat Earth« ist die Welt auf unserem Desktop wieder zu einer flachen Scheibe geworden, die wir nur virtuell bereisen und in welcher andere Orte und Länder nur wenige Klicks entfernt erscheinen.

Daran habe ich mit meinem Kollegen Jon Ippolito zusammengearbeitet. Nun arbeite ich mit Caitlin Jones, die an der Entwicklung des Projekts maßgeblich beteiligt ist. Im Katalog findet sich ein Beitrag von mir, der Bezug auf frühere Texte zu Paiks Ein-Kanal-Videobändern und Arbeiten fürs Fernsehen nimmt, ein Essay von Caitlin, die sich mit dem Einfluss Nam June Paiks auf eine jüngere Generation von Arbeiten beschäftigt, sowie eine kurze Analyse zu Global Groove von der Kunsthistorikerin Anja Osswald. Die Publikation beinhaltet auch einen Nachdruck des 1974 vom Everson Museum herausgegebenen Katalogs mit frühen Texten von Paik. Damit vermitteln wir die damaligen Sichtweisen und Paiks frühe Äußerungen über Video und Fernsehen.
