I suppose the belief in oracles can be traced to the desire to know the future. Unfortunately, the only sure guide to the future is the past, and even that isn't always reliable. Because some prophecies are more or less accurate, however, believers think they have good evidence for the reality of prophecy. Yet, many prophecies are ambiguous and open to several interpretations, making it possible to fit a wide array of events, some contradictory, into the predictive circle. Some prophecies are made after the fact. For example, after Hitler was dead and gone, it was discovered that Nostradamus had predicted the whole Nazi affair, centuries ago. Some prophecies are correct due to chance. Some chance events seem highly improbable to people when in fact they are not that improbable at all. Predicting that there will be an earthquake in California is no great shakes since there are several thousand every year. Predicting an American soldier will be killed by a land mine in Bosnia is not as risky a prediction as it might sound. Finally, belief in oracles is aided by selective thinking. The Intensive Care project brought 159 of them under the wing of 13 consultants who worked on an individual basis to help these older workers evaluate their own situation, acquire new skills, and get back to work. Orientation sessions were followed by training where needed, in computer literacy and modern production systems for example. After ten months, 42 of these older workers have found new jobs, and nine are in further training: an experienced machine adjuster for example, has become a manager for the railway company today, thanks to Intensive Care.

Das Projekt „Intensive Betreuung" stellte 159 dieser Arbeiter 13 Berater zur Seite, die den älteren Arbeitnehmern individuell dabei halfen, ihre eigene Situation einzuschätzen, neue Fertigkeiten zu erlernen und wieder in die Arbeitswelt einzutreten. Den Orientierungsseminaren folgten, wenn nötig, Weiterbildungskurse, beispielsweise in den Bereichen EDV und moderne Fertigungssysteme. Nach zehn Monaten haben 42 dieser älteren Arbeitnehmer eine neue Stelle gefunden, und neun weitere durchlaufen weitere Ausbildungsmaßnahmen: So wurde dank der Intensiven Betreuung beispielsweise ein erfahrener Teilezurichter zum Zugführer bei der Deutschen Bahn.

O&O Software’s freeware O&O RegEditor makes accessing registration databases in Windows systems particularly quick and simple. For example, after a high-precision search is performed, a list of results is displayed, together with the corresponding key paths. Searches are performed without users having to make those irritating confirmations of every interim result. Users can also copy paths direct from websites or manuals into the address line and navigate straight to them. As a history of all paths visited is saved, navigating between different keys is quick and easy. The ability to simply copy and paste complete registry keys and subkeys is especially helpful when testing settings, in order to save old settings for restoration at a later date.
