Eingeladen hatte dazu Projektkoordinatorin Prof. Dr. Nicole Dubiler vom Max-Planck-Institut für Marine Mikrobiologie (Bremen). Die Koordination vor Ort oblag Dr. Miriam Weber (HYDRA). Das Konzept des Workshops bestand darin, Fachleute für mikrobielle Symbiosen mit Meerestieren und verwandter Forschungsgebiete wie mariner Biogeochemie, Meiobenthologie, Wirbellosenökologie, Modelling und Flachwasserforschung mit Studenten des ITN in einem Exkursionsumfeld zusammen zu bringen. Der Wissenstransfer zwischen allen Teilnehmern wurde besonders durch Gruppernprojekte zu verschiedenen Themen gefördert. Jeder der Fachleute hatte eine Lehreinheit über sein Spezialgebiet vorbereitet, das neben Vorträgen auch Vorschläge zu Experimenten einschloss. Die Doktoranden bildeten Arbeitsgruppen und bearbeiteten ein oder mehrere Projekte, und standen dabei im ständigen Austausch mit den Teilnehmern der anderen Projektgruppen. Ein großer Teil des Workshops bestand aus In-situ-Beobachtungen und Probenahmen beim Schnorcheln und Gerätetauchen, der Aufarbeitung von Proben sowie der Erarbeitung und Durchführung von Laborexperimenten in einer sehr explorativen und spielerischen Heransgehensweise. Durch den hohen Anteil an Lehrenden mit einem Verhältnis von nahezu 1:1 war die Betreuung der Studenten sehr intensiv. Sowohl Lehrende wie Studierende waren sich einig, dass der Fortschritt und die Ergebnisse der Projekte für die kurze zur Verfügung stehende Zeit erstaunlich waren. Ein weiterer Aspekt des Workshops war die Möglichkeit für die eingeladenen Experten zusammen mit Fachkollegen und Doktoranden neue Bereiche und Forschungsthemen zu sondieren. Die allabendlichen Diskussionsrunden auf der HYDRA-Terrasse gaben den Rahmen zur Erörterung aktueller Fragen aus der mariner Symbioseforschung und zum Austausch der Arbeitsgruppen untereinander.
