Después de su creación en 1995, con los acuerdos de Marrakesh, la Organización Mundial del Comerció (OMC) se ha convertido es una de las fuersas de la ofensiva neoliberal por la tríada Estados Unidos de América, Unión Europea y Japón, la OMC toma las riendas sin reparto de la mercantilización y tiene como filosofía única la del máximo provecho para las sociedades transnacionales. Bajo su batuta, los mercados no se desregularizan sino que se regularizan según el único interés de estos últimos. La imposición de acuerdos como los relativos a la agricultura, al comercio de servicios (AGCS) o a la propiedad intelectual (ADPIC) se hacen en detrimento de los derechos de los pueblos y del interés general de las poblaciones. El acuerdo sobre los ADPIC dan, por ejemplo, carta blanca a estas sociedades para saquear los recursos y sabiduría tradicional de los países del Sur por la patente sobre los seres vivos por la práctica de precios prohibitivos sobre los medicamentos esenciales.
