Unfortunately for Tawney Meiorin, a similar story wasn't fictional. She was hired as a forest firefighter by the Province of British Columbia. She did her work well until three years later when the province adopted a new series of fitness tests for forest firefighters. She passed three of the tests but failed the fourth one, a 2.5 kilometre run designed to test her aerobic fitness. Since her aerobic fitness fell below the minimum standard, Tawney Meiorin was fired. Tawney felt the test discriminated against women. How? Women have a lower aerobic capacity than most men and cannot increase their capacity - even with ample training - enough to meet the standard.

For each one, a data sheet gives a description of the animal, a commentary on its biology and ecology, as well as its distribution with a detailed map. Original photographs or drawings illustrate the species, and easy to use identification keys will help with species differentiation.

A post-vacation vacation is probably what many people feel that they need when they realize how much has to be done once they're back to normality at home. It may well have been a fun-filled vacation with new memories to keep but getting back on track is hard work on its own. At least, that’s how it is for me. I also feel this way after every weekend. Monday mornings are the hardest because I am always thinking about the hectic schedule I have lined up for the week. I look at my watch and realize I'm running late for work, and have to jump out of bed to get ready as quickly as I can. On my way out, I check the time again, grab my briefcase and get right into the day with a quick stop at the coffee shop downstairs for a take-out doughnut to eat en route to work. The thought of how I'd managed to completely lose track of time during the past two weeks away is bittersweet. Living off the clock without having to think about much of anything was amazing, but I am glad to be back on the go and getting life done, with my watch keeping me on time for the meetings and social gatherings I had planned for the week.

J’ai également ce sentiment après chaque week-end, car affronter le lundi matin est ce qu’il y a de plus pénible quand je pense à l’emploi du temps chargé qui m’attend pour la semaine. Je regarde ma montre et je réalise que je suis en retard pour aller travailler, je saute hors du lit pour me préparer aussi vite que possible. En partant, je vérifie l’heure à nouveau, j’attrape ma mallette et je commence ma journée en m’arrêtant rapidement pour acheter un croissant au café d’en bas. Je le mangerai pendant le trajet. J’ai un pincement au cœur en pensant à la façon dont j’ai réussi à perdre toute notion du temps pendant mes deux semaines de vacances. Ne plus avoir à regarder l’heure ni à réfléchir à quoi que ce soit était délicieux, mais j’étais ravi de me remettre dans le mouvement et de pouvoir compter sur ma montre pour être à l’heure aux réunions et aux sorties notées dans mon agenda de la semaine.

También me siento así tras algunos fines de semana. Los lunes por la mañana son especialmente duros, pues me pongo a pensar en la ajetreada agenda que he organizado para esa semana. Miro el reloj y me doy cuenta de que llego tarde al trabajo. Pego un salto de la cama y me preparo tan rápido como puedo. De camino al trabajo, vuelvo a mirar el reloj, cojo el maletín y comienzo el día con una breve parada en la cafetería, donde compro un dónut para comer por el camino. Guardo el agridulce recuerdo de cómo perdía la noción del tiempo durante mis dos semanas de vacaciones. Vivir al margen del reloj, sin pensar en nada, fue maravilloso; pero me alegro de volver a estar en movimiento, organizar mi día a día y, con ayuda de mi reloj, llegar a tiempo a las reuniones y eventos sociales que he planeado en mi agenda semanal.

Unfortunately he fell down the steps and bloodied his forehead and banged up his shin. Warm liquid dripped over his right eye. Painstakingly he got up. With heavy, echoing steps the two guards followed behind him. One, a dwarf with a harsh face, carried a torch that illuminated his ugly features consisting of disgusting eyes, nose, mouth and forehead in a pale light. The other was tall and strong and hit his callous palms with the shaft of a whip. He grinned viciously and a mouth with gaps and yellow teeth appeared. "Go on!" he barked in a thunderous voice and pushed the shaft of the whip into the prisoner's back so that he stumbled and fell again. This time a massive door made of oak stopped the fall. Almost unconscious he stayed down and stared at cob webs. Something hurried across his hand with a squeal. Then the tall one put him on his feet and the dwarf opened the door. Immediately, stinking, stale air hit his nose. He wondered what was expecting him behind this door, way below ground. If only he could climb up the stairs again towards the light. Did he have to go down into this endless dungeon that held him prisoner. He didn't even remember anything before. "Light! Only light!". He moved along the stony floor. The dwarf put the torch into a holder and a rectangular room with an arched ceiling from which water was dripping, was illuminated. Various devices and tools were arranged along the walls and hung from the ceiling. In the center there was some sort of bed with curious features. The floor was slightly tilted towards the center so that any kind of liquids would flow there and disappear in a gutter.

Unsanft wurde er die abgetretene Treppe in diesem feuchten Gewölbe hinabgestossen. Er war mit rostigen Ketten gefesselt, die ihm in die Handgelenke schnitten und so stolperte er und prallte gegen die nassglänzende Wand, an der der Verputz abbröckelte und sich Kalk gebildet hatte. Unglücklicherweise schlug er sich die Stirn blutig und das Schienbein an einer Treppenstufe blau. Warme Flüssigkeit triefte über sein rechtes Auge. Mühselig rappelte er sich auf. Mit schweren, widerhallenden Schritten kamen seine beiden Wächter hinter ihm herab. Der eine, ein kleiner Wicht mit grobem Gesicht, trug eine Fackel, die sein abstossendes Gebilde aus Augen, Nase, Mund und Stirn in einem bleichen Licht erschienen liess. Der zweite war gross und muskulös und schlug sich mit dem Stiel einer Peitsche auf die schwielige Händefläche. Er grinste hämisch und Mund mit Lücken und einigen gelben Zähnen kam zum Vorschein. "Geh schon!" donnerte er und stiess ihn mit dem Peitschenstiel in den Rücken, dass er ein weiteres Mal fiel. Diesmal stoppte einige massive Eichentür den Fall. Benommen blieb er liegen und starrte in ein staubverhangenes Spinnennetz. Etwa huschte piepsend über seine Hand. Dann stellte der Grosse ihn auf die Füsse und der Zwerg öffnete die knarrende Tür. Sofort ging ihm stinkende, abgestandene Luft in die Nase. Er fragte sich, was ihn hinter dieser Tür erwarten würde, weit unter der Erde. Könnte er doch noch einmal die Treppe nach oben steigen, wo es hell sein würde. Musste er denn diesen unendlichen Weg in dieses Gewölbe gehen, in dem er sich verfangen hatte. Er wusste nicht einmal mehr, was vorher war. "Licht! Nur Licht!". Er bewegte sich auf steinernem Boden. Der Zwerg steckte die Fackel in eine Halterung und ein rechteckiger Raum mit gewölbter Decke, von der Wasser tropfte, wurde ausgeleuchtet. Verschiedene Geräte und Werkzeuge waren an die Wand gestellt und aufgehängt. In der Mitte stand eine Art Liege aus Holz mit seltsamen Vorrichtungen dran. Der Boden war zur Mitte leicht gesenkt, so dass irgendwelche Flüssigkeiten wohl in die Mitte fliessen und in einem Ablaufrohr verschwinden würden.

In any case, the fact that they let him carry out his performance nonetheless testifies to a certain degree of trust; along with munificence, this is another concept the artist gives special credence to in his work. Trust also plays a key role when the buyer of Yavuzsoy's lined paper drawings has to promise the artist to give them to anyone else who, upon seeing them, says they would also like to have one: a generous act in which Yavuzsoy calls the circulation of art goods into question. Since 2004, he has been creating the lined sheets of paper that strictly adhere to the DIN (German industry standard) norm of industrially manufactured writing paper. The artist draws his straight lines on white paper on an almost daily basis-freehand, but with an underlying "model" to go by-until the pencil he is using is depleted. The resulting drawing is the product of a machine-like virtuosity, without ever quite being able to attain to the industrial norm. But Yavuzsoy explains that he is not concerned with the idea of artist as machine: "People can always see that the paper is drawn by hand." What fascinates him more is the endlessness of the self-appointed task, in a state of dissolution and approaching the inexhaustible.

Dass sie ihn trotzdem seine Performance durchführen ließen, zeugt jedenfalls von einem gewissen Maß an Vertrauen - neben Generosität ein weiterer Begriff, dem der Künstler in seinem Werk besondere Bedeutung beimisst. Vertrauen spielt auch dann eine zentrale Rolle, wenn der Käufer von Yavuzsoys Briefpapier-Zeichnungen dem Künstler versprechen muss, sie an jeden weiterzuverschenken, der bei ihrem Anblick äußert, auch ein Exemplar besitzen zu wollen. Ein generöser Akt, mit dem Yavuzsoy den Warenkreislauf der Kunst in Frage stellt. Seit 2004 produziert er jene linierten Blätter, die sich streng an die DIN-Norm von industriell hergestelltem Briefpapier anlehnen. Fast täglich zieht der Künstler freihändig, jedoch mit einem unterliegenden "Model" gerade Linien über weiße Blätter - solange bis sich der von ihm benutzte Stift erschöpft hat. Das Ergebnis ist eine Zeichnung, die das Ergebnis einer maschinenartigen Virtuosität ist, ohne die industrielle Norm je ganz erreichen zu können. Um den Künstler als Maschine gehe es ihm hierbei jedoch nicht, erklärt Yavuzsoy: "Man wird immer erkennen, dass das Blatt von Hand gezeichnet ist." Was ihn hingegen fasziniert, ist die Endlosigkeit der selbst gewählten Aufgabe "die in sich gelöst", also tendenziell unerschöpflich ist.
