Le premier dimanche de Carême, le dimanche qui suit le mercredi des cendres, de nombreux feux de carnaval et cortèges aux flambeaux ont lieu dans le canton de Bâle-campagne. A Liestal, le chef-lieu, le cortège aux flambeaux est devenu un impressionnant spectacle dans les années 1930 à l’initiative d’un groupe du club de gymnastique.

On the first Sunday of Lent, i.e. the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday, the canton of Basel-Landschaft comes alight with carnival bonfires and torchlight processions. In the 1930s, the torchlight procession in Liestal, the cantonal capital, expanded into a giant fire show on the initiative of a group from the gymnastics club. Today, “Chienbäse” is run by the Liestal Carnival Committee on behalf of the town council. Spectators watch a procession of large burning torches (“Chienbäse”) and about twenty burning carts go by. The torches are hand-made from pinewood by the participants themselves, and the carts are also made especially for the event by the “Füürwägeler” or “fire carters”. Around 90 cubic metres of wood are used each year, all provided by the local municipal authority. The fiery extravaganza is preceded by a procession of painted lanterns carried by carnival groups, who drum and pipe their way around the town.

Am ersten Fastensonntag, dem Sonntag nach Aschermittwoch, finden im Kanton Basel-Landschaft zahlreiche Fasnachtsfeuer und Fackelumzüge statt. Im Kantonshauptort Liestal hat sich in den 1930er Jahren auf Initiative einer Gruppe des Turnvereins der Fackelumzug zu einem riesigen Feuerspektakel entwickelt. Der «Chienbäse» wird heute vom Liestaler Fasnachtskomitee im Auftrag der Stadt Liestal durchgeführt. Am Chienbäse-Umzug werden grosse brennende Fackeln (Chienbäse) und rund zwanzig brennende Wagen durch die Stadt gezogen. Die Chienbäse werden von den Teilnehmenden aus Föhrenholz selber hergestellt. Auch die Feuerwagen richten die «Füürwägeler» selber für den Umzug her. Das Holz, jährlich um die 90 Ster, wird von der Bürgergemeinde zur Verfügung gestellt. Im Vorgang zum Feuerspektakel findet der Laternenumzug statt. Fasnachtscliquen tragen trommelnd und pfeifend bemalte Laternen durch die Stadt.

La sera della prima domenica di quaresima, la domenica dopo il mercoledì delle ceneri, il Cantone di Basilea Campagna è tutto un bagliore di falò di carnevale e fiaccolate. Nel capoluogo cantonale Liestal, negli anni 1930, su iniziativa di un gruppo di membri della locale società ginnica, la tradizionale fiaccolata si è trasformata in uno spettacolo di fuoco particolarmente suggestivo: il «Chienbäse». In occasione del «Chienbäse» (letteralmente: «scope di pino»), organizzato dal comitato di carnevale cittadino su incarico del Comune, enormi fiaccole ardenti a forma di scopa e circa 20 carri colmi di legna in fiamme sfilano per la città vecchia di Liestal. Le «Chienbäse» sono fabbricate dai tedofori stessi con legno di pino e anche i carri di fuoco sono messi a punto per la sfilata dai loro conducenti. La legna – circa 90 steri all’anno – è offerta dal patriziato. Prima dello spettacolo, gruppi carnascialeschi sfilano per la città con lanterne dipinte al suono di pifferi e tamburi.
