Durant la période des Auersperg, le château devint aussi un lieu fréquenté par des gens comme J. W. Goethe, qui entre autres y célébra son 72e anniversaire avec des feux de Bengale, y écrivit l'une des perles de la poésie mondiale (Elégie) et y passa en septembre 1823 ses derniers jours sur le territoire tchèque, lorsqu’après sa séparation avec Ulrike von Levetzow, il se sépara également à jamais du territoire de la Bohême.

When in possession of the Auersperg family, the chateau was favoured and often visited by J. W. Goethe who, among other things, celebrated his 72nd birthday with Indian bonfires, wrote one of the masterpieces of world poetry (The Marienbad Elegy) and spent here his last days in Bohemia in September 1823 when, after parting with Ulrika von Levetzow, he bid Bohemia his last farewell at the chateau. The following is an extract from his diary describing his first visit to Hartenberg: "When first looking from such great height, you are amazed. The ancient chateau is made up of main and ancillary buildings, arbours and galleries, towers and spires, walls and courtyards of different kinds, all standing on an edge of a headland, below which three valleys meet and three water streams coalesce into a one... I believe the aged elm trees with woods underneath tower as high as the chateau to create an overwhelming scene. ... It ought to be mentioned, nonetheless, that only one's own eyes are able to capture what no words can come close to depict…"

Unter den Auerspergern war sie auch beliebtes Reiseziel von J.W. Goethe, der hier unter anderem seinen 72. Geburtstag mit bengalischem Feuer feierte, eines der Kleinode seiner weltberühmten Poesie schrieb (Elegie) und hier auch seine letzten Tage auf dem Gebiet von Böhmen verbrachte, nämlich im September 1823, als er sich nach seinem Abschied von Ulrike von Levetzow auch für immer Abschied von Böhmen nahm. Was wäre passender, als hier eine Notiz aus seinem Tagebuch zu zitieren, als er das erste Mal Burg Hartenberg erblickte: "Der erste Blick aus großer Höhe ist überraschend. Das altertümliche Schloss besteht aus Haupt- und Nebengebäuden, Altanen und Galerien, Türmen und Türmchen, Mauern und Höfen verschiedenster Formen auf dem Ausläufer eines Bergspornes, an dem drei Täler aufeinandertreffen und sich drei Flüsse vermählen… Es scheint, dass nur die uralten Rüstern, die unter ihm ein Wäldchen bilden, bis zum Schloss aufragen und damit ein fesselndes Bild entstehen lassen. ............ Es ist zu betonen, dass man mit eigenen Augen gesehen haben muss, was nicht mit Worten auszudrücken ist…"

Durante el dominio de los Auersperg Hartenberg era el lugar preferido de J. W. Goethe que, entre otro, celebró allí con fuegos indios su setenta y dos aniversario, escribió allí una de las joyas de la poesía mundial (Elegías) o pasó allí sus últimos días en el territorio checo en septiembre de 1823 y, después de despedirse de Ulrika von Levetzow, se despidió para siempre del país checo. Aquí tenemos unas frases de su diario, de su primera visita a Hartenberg: "La primera mirada desde la gran altura es sorprendente. El palacio antiguo está compuesto de edificios principales y colaterales, templetes y galerías, torres y torrecillas, muros y patios de diferentes tipos, todo esto en un saliente de roca, donde coinciden tres valles y tres ríos y se unen... Creo que solamente los olmos vetustos alcanzan la altura del palacio formando abajo un bosque y creando una imagen impresionante... Hay que mencionar que solamente el verlo con los propios ojos puede uno percibir lo que no es posible expresar con palabras...”

Durante il periodo degli Auersperg il castello divenne uno dei luoghi prediletti di J. W. Goethe, che qui celebrò con fuochi indiani il suo 72° compleanno, scrisse uno dei gioielli più preziosi della poesia mondiale (Elegia), e trascorse i suoi ultimi giorni in Boemia nel settembre del 1823, quando dopo essersi accomiatato da Ulrike von Levetzow disse addio per sempre a questa regione. Goethe descrisse nel suo diario le prime impressioni all’arrivo nel castello di Hartenberg: ”Il primo sguardo sulle vallate sottostanti da una tale altezza lascia senza parole. L’antico palazzo è composto da edifici principali e secondari, altane e gallerie, torri e torrette, mura e cortili di diverso tipo, che sorgono su un costone roccioso all’incrocio di tre vallate, là dove tre corsi d’acqua s’incontrano per dar vita ad un unico fiume…Penso che solo gli olmi secolari riescano ad eguagliare l’altezza del palazzo, e insieme al sottobosco creano uno scenario così intenso...inutile aggiungere che solo gli occhi sono in grado di catturare quel che le parole non riescono ad esprimere…”.
