Since 2004, he has been creating the lined sheets of paper that strictly adhere to the DIN (German industry standard) norm of industrially manufactured writing paper. The artist draws his straight lines on white paper on an almost daily basis-freehand, but with an underlying "model" to go by-until the pencil he is using is depleted. The resulting drawing is the product of a machine-like virtuosity, without ever quite being able to attain to the industrial norm. But Yavuzsoy explains that he is not concerned with the idea of artist as machine: "People can always see that the paper is drawn by hand." What fascinates him more is the endlessness of the self-appointed task, in a state of dissolution and approaching the inexhaustible.

And the reality of things is that there isn’t a grant big enough in all of North America to keep me going for one year. At the rate that I spend money running a foundry, running this operation, there isn’t one… a Canada Council Grant is not much money - $30,000? That would keep my operation going for a month, so what can I do? I have to sell, but I don’t compromise my work to sell it because I know fundamentally that the way to sell work is not to compromise. If you compromise people won’t buy it, it’s a simple business thing.

Au rythme où je dépense de l’argent pour opérer ma fonderie, il n’y en a pas une... une bourse du Conseil des arts du Canada, c’est peu d’argent – 30,000$? Ça me permettrait de continuer mon opération pendant un mois, alors que dois-je faire? Je dois vendre, mais je ne compromets pas mes oeuvres pour les vendre, parce que je sais fondamentalement que la meilleure façon de vendre ses oeuvres est de ne pas se compromettre. Si vous compromettez votre art, les gens n’achèteront pas, c’est une simple question d’affaires.

The hall height including a parapet is 11,15 m, out of which 8 m is a free space without intermediate supports.  The eastern facade envelope with most of its area glazed belongs between the most interesting works and was a big challenge mainly when structural reasons are considered. Sipral chose steel welded structures made of steel oblong tubes of 180 x 60 x 5 mm to form the basic bearing grid of the facade. On this structure there was an all-glazed glazing system with thermal breaks, Schüco FW50+ Aufsatzkonstruktion (now labelled as AOC 50), with face width of 50 mm. Width of modules between mullions is 1500 mm, height zoning of the facade is the following one: a non-transparent part of a plinth is 0,25 m, a glazed part is 1,85 m + 1,5 m, a non-transparent part is 0,5 m, and a transparent part is 1,5 + 2,2 m. The non-transparent part at the parapet is 3,35 m high.

La hauteur du hall de gare, y compris l’allège, fait 11,15 m dont 8 m formant un espace libre sans possibilité d’appuis intermédiaires. C’est pour cette raison que la réalisation de l’enveloppe de la façade faisait partie, avec la partie majeure de la surface vitrée, des travaux les plus intéressants et représentait un grand défi surtout du point de vue structurel. Pour l’appui de la façade, Sipral a donc choisi une charpente primaire en acier, soudée de tubes rectangulaires de dimensions 180 x 60 x 5 mm. Sur la charpente, a été posé le système d’aluminium vitré avec interruption des ponts thermiques, Schüco FW50+ Aufsatzkonstruktion (aujourd’hui AOC 50), avec la largeur exposée des profilés de 50 mm. La largeur des modules entre les montants est de 1500 mm, la disposition horizontale de la façade est la suivante : la partie opaque du socle fait 0,25 m, la partie vitrée 1,85 m + 1,5 m, une partie opaque de 0,5 m, ensuite une partie vitrée de 1,5 + 2,2 m et une partie opaque au droit de l’allège de 3,35 m.

Étant un biologiste qui s’intéresse au comportement des animaux de l’Arctique, je passe souvent de longues heures à surveiller des mammifères et à noter leurs agissements. Par contre, je suis surtout habitué à observer les ours blancs sur terre. Mon expérience précédente se limitait à la station de recherche du Musée canadien de la nature sur Bathurst Island, laquelle est située sur une corniche qui surplombe la Polar Bear Pass, une large vallée à végétation dense où habitent le boeuf musqué, le caribou et plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux nicheurs. Nous y voyions surtout des ours blancs solitaires traverser l’île environ une fois par mois, et de loin. Ils fouillaient des carcasses de boeufs musqués morts, chassaient le caribou, poursuivaient les lemmings dans la neige et dormaient pendant plusieurs heures. Étant donné que nous ne portions jamais d’armes à feu, nous nous inquiétions toujours à leur sujet, certains chercheurs ayant même vécu des incidents traumatisants en présence d’ours dans le camp ou sur le terrain.

When entering Arboran, the first impression a wanderer gets is a truly majestic one. A grand victory square lies right in front of a mighty city whose towers rise high into the clouds. There are houses upon houses in narrow streets, and everywhere there are merchants peddling their wares — nobody would ever think for a minute that half of the city had been annihilated in a devastating natural catastrophe. However, if you follow the course of the Moy waterfall past the large cliff and the deep gorge, you will notice numerous houses that have been buried and which were destroyed. One can only imagine the magnitude of the wrath that must have rained down back then.

Der Eindruck von Arboran, den ein ankommender Wanderer gewinnt, ist wahrhaft majestätisch. Ein prachtvoller Triumphplatz liegt direkt vor einer mächtigen Stadt, deren Türme hoch in den Himmel ragen. In engen Gassen reiht sich Haus an Haus, überall bieten Kaufleute ihre Waren feil – niemand würde vermuten, dass die Hälfte der Metropole in einer verheerenden Naturkatastrophe vernichtet wurde. Doch wenn man dem Verlauf des Moy-Wasserfalles folgt und an der großen Klippe und der tiefen Schlucht vorbeikommt, erkennt man viele verschüttete und zerstörte Häuser. Man kann sich nur vorstellen, welche Pracht dort dereinst geherrscht hat.

The overall picture is a mixed one. A partnership of equals with China appears most likely for larger countries, particularly those in South America. On condition, however, that China’s attention can be directed towards activities other than raw materials and infrastructure. Smaller countries, especially those in Central America, have hardly any scope to actively shape relations with China. The opposite is in fact the case: If the global competition for raw materials continues to intensify as is expected, these countries – as net importers of raw materials – are more likely to feel the negative effects.

Für die kleineren Länder insbesondere Zentralamerikas gibt es kaum Spielräume für eine aktive Gestaltung der Beziehungen zur Volksrepublik, im Gegenteil: Wenn sich die weltweite Konkurrenz um Rohstoffe wie erwartet weiter verschärft, werden diese Länder als Nettoimporteure von Rohstoffen eher negativ betroffen sein.

Besonders viel Spaß macht mir die enge Zusammenarbeit mit den Kollegen aus dem operativen Geschäft, Highlights sind hier natürlich Projekte in unseren Außenstellen wie zum Beispiel in Peking. Seit meinem Praktikum in der Munich Re Außenstelle in China begeistert mich das Land. Vor allem die chinesische Art des gemeinsamen Essens hat mich beeindruckt. Die Speisen werden für die gesamte Gruppe bestellt und das Teilen spielt dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Zudem bekommt man als Europäer besonders beim Essen einen direkten Eindruck von der Vielfalt und den kulinarischen Besonderheiten des Landes.
