The French filmmakers rewrite history here: Paris is ruled by the son of Napoleon III, the two World Wars never happened. Instead, the country and its people are dependent on coal and stuck in the early stages of industrialisation. The government is to blame for the standstill, ensuring that all scientists mysteriously vanish. Steampunk is a reality in this world, not nostalgia: society has to put up with the scientific findings of the previous century. What is happening in this society also interests the young Avril (voiced by Marion Cotillard), the orphaned daughter of two missing scientists. While continuing her parents’ research, she learns that they are still alive. Together with her talking cat Darwin and the sly crook Julius, and followed by a particularly ambitious gendarme, she embarks on the adventurous search for her parents and is constantly confronted with new challenges in a world rigged by the state. These sculptures bear titles such as Fuck Face (1994) and Two-faced Cunt (1995). Other works depict decomposing skeletons covered with flies, worms, and snakes, inspired by Goya's drawing cycle Los desastres de la Guerra (1810-1820). That the Chapman's additionally auctioned off two volumes from 1937 with original editions of these etchings and adorned them with Mickey Mouse faces, insect antennae, and swastikas, caused an outrage. Small scale wooden buildings prevail within the protected historical village center of Immensee. In the periphery of this central core stands a new 6- family house. The urban pattern and density of the new dwelling is adapted to the existing built environment, the building is split in two volumes connected with a common staircase. The gable side of the house is placed towards village square and integrates in an ideal way in the row of new and old houses. There are two distinguished typologies - floor apartments on the typical floors and duplex apartments that expand to the attic floor. The building corpus is clearly defined; there is a low base which bears the upgoing facade and is accentuated by two different red tones. The modernity of these buildings gets underlined through the use of a clear and basic formal language. The staircase volume is made completely out of glass and has therefore a reduced presence.

Here, concave cones, irregular pyramids, slender shafts, and rotund growths rise up, the very forms from the additions of the architectonic “body” in the exhibition hall. Zaha Hadid’s concept is so complex that it would have been unthinkable without the aid of modern technology. Only ten years ago, a design of this kind would never have come about simply because the necessary programs hadn’t yet been written; nor did computers exist that were capable of handling the vast amounts of data.

La historia del arte es compuesta de muchas páginas, algunos son famosos, otras se han perdido o, quizás mejor, han sido olvidadas. Tarea de cada artista es recobrar a alguien de estas páginas y en el caso de Battista Brevigliero tal operación aparece rica e interesante. La lección de la pintura del humanismo con las llamadas a los adultos, cuál Botticelli, da a sus cuadros sin tiempo, el no ser del tiempo como dimensión universalizzante. La metafísica, fácil pensar en ¡De Chirico!, se convierte en instrumento de geometría con la abundancia de arcos, elipsis, cuadrados: la naturaleza es un libro matemático que lleva al infinito y en efecto sus cuadros a menudo tienen una notable profundidad. Central es la gran lección del surrealismo del novecientos que garantiza con sus símbolos, la mujer y el caballo sobre todo, aquella miembro fundamental del arte que es lo fantástico, en este caso en su dimensión más marcadamente onírica. Por fin la lección del realismo en Battista Brevigliero es equipaje técnico, es decir acercamiento cromático capaz de suscitar emociones y, por algunos aspectos, provocaciones. Los colorado y el azul sobresalen como manchas de una historia, aquel del arte, que es trabajo individual justo porque hunde sus raíces en el trabajo de los adultos del pasado.
