Oog Volkskrant online is an op-ed podium and part of the online edition of the Volkskrant. Oog (Eye) asks audiovisual artists to share their views on the news and current events, and on the role, function and composition of the news and current events. In this way artists can take on the role of opinion makers in a news environment. Oog began in September, 2005, and each week shows the work of a different artist. After that, the work can be found in the accompanying archive. Nanette Hoogslag, Oog's initiator and curator, has made a selection from the archive especially for Video Vortex.2. The works are shown via an interface specially developed by Joes Koppers and Bente van Bourgondiën. De installaties van Nicholas Hlobo (Kaapstad, 1975) zijn rijk aan kleuren, stoffen en borduursels. Ze doen denken aan de kleurrijke kleding van Afrikaanse vrouwen. Maar bij nadere beschouwing ontvouwt zich de tweede laag die refereert aan het gruwelijke en gewelddadige verleden van het Zuid-Afrika van de apartheid en post-apartheid.

Nicholas Hlobo (Cape Town, 1975) makes installations which abound in colours, textiles and embroidery. They are reminiscent of the colourful clothing of African women. But a closer look reveals the second layer which refers to the gruesome and violent past of South Africa during apartheid and after apartheid. A past which a black homosexual artist cannot escape. Hlobo’s urge to make the history and culture of his country known all over the world through his work is inextricably connected to his native soil. Like Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko and Desmond Tutu, Hlobo comes from the traditional Xhosa community in the east of the Cape. The Xhosa community is characterized by traditions and customs which are passed on from generation to generation.

The 3 most beautiful villages of France are located in… l'Hérault ! Built about 1 000 years ago, Minerve, Olargues and Saint-Guilhem-le-désert diserve a stop. Compared to a cruise liner ran aground the scrubland, Minerve is crossing 2 rivers La Cesse and Le Brian. Stand on its headland, the village thought it was invincible for a long time. Da man in diesen auf einem Felsvorsprung gelegenen Ort nur über eine Brücke kommt, hielt man ihn lange für uneinnehmbar. Weiter im Norden, am Fuß der Monts de l'Espinouse, erhebt sich Olargues mit seinem Glockenturm, einem Überrest der ehemaligen Burg. Der Ort zählt zu den schönsten Stätten des Regionalen Naturparks Haut-Languedoc. Aber weiter im Hinterland der Region Languedoc sollten Sie unbedingt Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert besuchen. Die tief eingeschnittenen "Gorges de l'Hérault" (Hérault-Schlucht) überragend, befindet sich in diesem Ort eine der schönsten Abteien des Départements: die von der UNESCO in das Weltkulturerbe der Menschheit aufgenommene Abtei Gellone.
