The Rhine Falls near Neuhausen is the largest waterfall in Europe. The spectacular landscape and historical buildings make for an impressive show by day, but also provide a unique backdrop for illuminations at night. The roots of the Rhine Falls illuminations are intertwined with the development of the tourism industry. Hotel owners began putting on Bengal light shows as early as the nineteenth century in order to offer their guests an extraordinary experience. In the twentieth century the illuminations were taken over by semi-public institutions. Since 1966 a grand fireworks display has taken place every year, enthralling around 10,000 spectators. For a long time the event was held on 1 August, but between 2009 and 2011 it was run by the Rhine Falls Interest Group on the penultimate Saturday in August. From 2012 onwards it will take place on 31 July. And since 12 April 2008 the Falls have been bathed in a new light. The electricity board of the Canton of Schaffhausen (EKS AG) celebrated its 100th birthday by giving the spectacle of nature a new illumination system. The light show, which is the work of St Gallen lighting designer Charles Keller, is run according to a schedule covering the whole year and presents the Falls in all their majestic grandeur.

Le début des illuminations des chutes du Rhin est étroitement lié au tourisme. Au 19e siècle déjà, les hôteliers s’efforçaient d’offrir à leurs hôtes un spectacle hors du commun avec une mise en scène de feux de Bengale. Au 20e siècle, des institutions semi-publiques reprirent l’organisation des illuminations. Un grand feu d’artifice est organisé chaque 1er août depuis 1966, qui attire près de 10 000 spectateurs. De 2009 à 2011, la « Communauté d’intérêt des chutes du Rhin » l’a également présenté l’avant-dernier samedi du mois d’août. Depuis 2012, le feu d’artifice a lieu le 31 juillet. Et depuis le 12 avril 2008, les chutes du Rhin baignent dans une nouvelle lumière : pour leur centenaire, les « Entreprises électriques du canton de Schaffhouse » (EKS AG) ont offert une nouvelle installation technique au spectacle des lumières. Le jeu de lumières conçu par le st-gallois Charles Keller a lieu toute l’année à heures fixes et met en scène de façon majestueuse cette merveille de la nature.

Dal 1966 ogni anno, in genere il 1° agosto, è organizzato un grande spettacolo di fuochi d'artificio che attira circa 10 000 spettatori. Negli anni 2009-2011, la comunità d'interesse delle cascate del Reno («Interessengemeinschaft Rheinfall») lo ha spostato al penultimo sabato del mese di agosto. Da quest'anno, invece, lo spettacolo si terrà il 31 luglio. Il 12 aprile 2008, la data in cui si è festeggiato il loro centenario, le cascate del Reno hanno ricevuto un regalo importante: un nuovo impianto d'illuminazione donato loro dall'azienda elettrica del Cantone di Sciaffusa («Elektrizitätswerk des Kantons Schaffhausen AG»). Il sapiente gioco di luci ideato dall'artista sangallese Charles Keller, visibile tutto l'anno a orari ben precisi, mette in risalto in maniera davvero originale questa meraviglia della natura.
