The cliché that residents of Appenzell are witty was born at the end of the 18th century thanks to the work of Johann Gottfried Ebel and others. Evidence of Appenzell humour goes further back, however, and in later years successful joke-tellers and satirists cemented the Appenzell people’s witty reputation. The humour in many Appenzell jokes depends on them being spoken, so they are passed on by oral tradition, but since the 19th century many have also been written down. The standard reference work is the well-known collection by Alfred Tobler, published in 1905. More recently, collections have been compiled by the great master of Appenzell humour Ruedi Rohner, Walter Koller, August Inauen and Toni-Sepp Wyss. The political side of Appenzell satire is represented by Carl Böckli, a fierce opponent of opportunism and totalitarian ideologies who published his caricatures and verses under the pseudonym Bö, primarily in the satirical magazine Nebelspalter. Simon Enzler is an exponent of the modern form of political and satirical comedy, while the 'comedy slams' that have emerged in recent years combine tradition and slam culture. Today, Appenzell jokes and humorous stories are often told at social gatherings and events or enjoyed in the form of audio books. Following the Appenzell joke trail (Witzwanderweg) between Heiden and Walzenhausen is the perfect way to get some exercise and have a good laugh at the same time.

Zeugnisse von Witz im Appenzell finden sich aber schon früher, und später sind es weit herum erfolgreiche Witzerzähler und Satiriker, die das Bild der lustigen Appenzeller besiegeln. Witze, die durch den mündlichen Vortrag ihre Wirkung entfalten und so auch weitergegeben werden, sind seit dem 19. Jahrhundert schriftlich festgehalten worden. Als Standardwerk gilt die bekannte Sammlung von Alfred Tobler aus dem Jahr 1905. In neuerer Zeit erschienen Sammlungen von Ruedi Rohner, dem "Altmeister des Appenzeller Witzes", von Walter Koller, August Inauen oder Toni-Sepp Wyss. Die politische Seite der Appenzeller Satire repräsentiert Carl Böckli, ein Kämpfer gegen Opportunismus und totalitäre Ideologien; er veröffentlichte seine Karikaturen und Verse unter dem Pseudonym "Bö" vor allem im "Nebelspalter". Für die moderne Form von Kabarett und Satire steht Simon Enzler, und der in jüngster Zeit entstandene "Witz-Slam" verbindet Tradition und Slam-Kultur. Appenzeller Witze und humorvolle Geschichten bringen uns heute im geselligen Kreis, an Veranstaltungen oder über die (Hör-)Buchform zum Lachen. Auf dem Witzwanderweg zwischen Heiden und Walzenhausen lässt sich die Bewegung der Bein- und der Lachmuskeln in idealer Weise verbinden.

Le testimonianze delle barzellette dell’Appenzello risalgono però a molto tempo prima; in seguito, quest’immagine degli abitanti dell’Appenzello s’imprime grazie a barzellettieri e satirici di successo. Le barzellette, che sortiscono il loro effetto e vengono tramandate nella dimensione dell’oralità, sono state ancorate nella scrittura a partire dall’Ottocento. È considerata opera di riferimento per eccellenza la famosa raccolta di Alfed Tobler del 1905. Più recentemente sono state pubblicate raccolte di Ruedi Rohner, ritenuto il maestro incontestato delle barzellette dell’Appenzello, come pure di Walter Koller, August Inauen e Toni-Sepp Wyss. A rappresentare l’aspetto politico della satira dell’Appenzello è Carl Böckli, che ha lottato contro l’opportunismo e le ideologie totalitarie; ha pubblicato le sue caricature e i suoi versi sotto lo pseudonimo di «Bö» principalmente nella rivista «Nebelspalter». Esponente della forma moderna del cabaret e della satira è Simon Enzler, e il «Witz-Slam», di recente creazione, che coniuga la tradizione e la cultura del «poetry slam». Le barzellette e le storie spiritose dell’Appenzello sono un’ottima occasione per farsi due risate fra amici e durante eventi pubblici oppure vengono lette in libri o ascoltate con audiolibri. Lungo il sentiero delle barzellette che congiunge Heiden a Walzenhausen ci s’imbatte in un programma che prevede il movimento dei muscoli delle gambe e di quelli sollecitati nelle risate, con il risultato di un connubio ideale.
