Commissioned by the International Ski Federation (FIS), the EPFL laboratory worked in association with the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research, (SLF Davos) and the universities of Salzburg and Oslo to perform measurements during the World Cup in order to better understand how factors such as equipment, snow, and the position of pickets influence the risk of accidents:“This season, we are taking measurements on the openers and athletes on the World Cup circuit. We were present at five Giant Slaloms and five downhill, including Wengen and Kitzbühel.”

Après s’être intéressé à la performance des sauteurs à ski, Julien Chardonnens travaille actuellement, sur la prévention des accidents en ski alpin de compétition. Mandaté par la Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS), le laboratoire de l'EPFL s'est associé à l’Institut Fédéral pour l'Etude de la Neige et des Avalanches, (SLF Davos) et aux universités de Salzbourg et Oslo pour réaliser des mesures lors de la coupe du monde afin de mieux comprendre comment les facteurs équipement-neige-piquetage influencent les risques d’accident : « Cette saison, nous faisons des mesures sur des ouvreurs et des athlètes lors du circuit coupe du monde. Nous étions présents à cinq slaloms géants et cinq descentes, dont Wengen et Kitzbühel. » Là aussi, les skieurs sont équipés de différents systèmes de mesure tels que des capteurs inertiels et un GPS. Mais d’autres paramètres sont analysés comme les conditions de neige ou le matériel.
