Vemos lo mismo cuando se lanza un cohete: los gases de escape que salen de la tobera del motor a alta velocidad van hacia la Tierra e impulsan el cohete en la dirección opuesta, hacia el cielo.

But one galaxy wasn’t big enough for the both black holes. The immense gravity of these objects may have pulled them towards each other, closer and closer, until they eventually crashed and melded into one. This violent collision then sent gravitational waves – warps in space – crashing through the Universe.

Se estas ondas foram mais fortes numa direcção do que noutras, o novo buraco negro deslocou-se na direcção oposta, um efeito chamado de “recuo”. Vemos a mesma coisa a acontecer quando um foguetão é lançado: os gases de escape que saem a alta velocidade dos bocais do motor precipitam-se sobre o solo e propulsionam o foguetão na direcção contrária, para o céu. Assim, o recém-formado buraco negro teria recebido um impulso suficiente para o afastar do centro da galáxia!

If these waves emitted more strongly in one direction than others, the new black hole would have been sent in the opposite direction, an effect called “recoil”. We see the same thing when a rocket launches: exhaust gases coming out of the engine nozzle at high speed push towards the Earth and propel the rocket in the opposite direction, towards the sky.

De enorme zwaartekracht van deze objecten trok ze misschien naar elkaar toe, dichter en dichterbij, tot ze uiteindelijk botsten en waren samengesmolten. Deze krachtige botsing zond toen zwaartekrachtgolven – krommingen in de ruimte – denderend door het Universum.

Ale na obě černé díry nebyla jedna galaxie dostatečně velká. Nesmírně silná gravitace je pravděpodobně přitáhla k sobě, stále blíž a blíž, než se srazily a splynuly v jednu gigantickou galaxii. Galaxia ce contine acestă gaură neagră a fost implicată într-o coliziune cu o altă galaxie, milioane de ani în urmă. Cele două galaxii s-au calmat în cele din urmă și s-au contopit formănd o galaxie mult mai mare, fiecare aducând cu ele propria gaură neagră supermasivă.
