Both male and female have a red crest and very bright yellow eyes. Even though they insect larvae, rotten wood termite (as is the case for all woodpeckers), the fundamental part of its diet is obtained by eating ants, they do so by trapping them with their sticky tongue. For this they come down to ground frequently; therefore the most frequent way to observe them is when they take off in flight from the ground, when in the presence of any observer.
