Dr. Klaas-Jan Tielrooij, former PhD student at FOM Institute AMOLF, also received a Rubicon grant. He will do research for two years at the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona (Spain) on 'Antennae for concealed information'. The capture of light particles (photons) from light sources which emit particles one by one is currently inefficient and difficult to control, and information is often lost: special (quantum mechanical) photon states are not preserved. We will capture this hidden information with new antenna technology.

The researchers studied a protein from the bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Instead of standard soap-like molecules they used the polymer SMA to isolate the protein and discovered that this not only led to the successful isolation of the protein but a good stability as well. The membrane was found to be even more stable than when the protein is in its natural environment. "This is because the immediate lipid environment is preserved and each protein is contained in its own polymer packaging. Consequently the protein cannot be influenced by its environment like it is in the membrane", explains FOM PHD researcher Stefan Scheidelaar. This result could bring the application of photosynthetic proteins in solar cells, example, a step closer.

Such an ultra-small photonic structure is only of any practical use if the light source can be placed in exactly the right location. FOM researcher Martin Frimmer has constructed a new experimental set-up in which light sources can be moved very accurately to within a few nanometers. The researchers glue a tiny light source onto the end of a very sharp needle. They move the needle through the photonic environment and measure the lifetime at each position. In this way, the researchers create a 'map' which indicates exactly where the photonic structure accelerates or slows emission of a photon. This map subsequently allows the researchers to place light-emitting molecules exactly where the properties are best.

This clears the way for a revolution in consumer electronics: just imagine, mobile phones and MP3-players that are 'survival-proof' when being dropped. On 20 March 2007 Prins will take her doctoral degree at the Delft University of Technology.

Voormalig FOM-oio Klaas-Jan Tielrooij publiceert hierover in Nature Physics.
Converting light into electricity, as happens in solar cells and light detectors, can probably be realised more efficiently with graphene. Most materials convert a single light particle into a single electron, but in graphene a single light particle can be converted into several hot electrons. As these hot electrons can generate current this mechanism of charge multiplication is an essential ingredient for obtaining energy from light with a minimal loss of energy. Klaas-Jan Tielrooij, who performed his PhD research at FOM Institute AMOLF, has published about this in Nature Physics.

  Kristalstructuur bismut...
The poorly conducting semi-metal bismuth assumes completely different crystal structures in thin films than in bulk form. The structure of the layers, distance between layers and number of layers appear to be formed such that exactly one standing wave of conducting electrons can develop. FOM PhD researcher Tjeerd Bollmann and his colleagues at the University of Twente discovered this when they grew ultra-thin bismuth films on a nickel substrate. Thin bismuth films are therefore probably far better conductors than the bulk crystal. The researchers published their unexpected result online today in Physical Review Letters.

In May 2008, NWO (formerly FOM) published a memorandum entitled 'Fundamental research for society', Valorisation at FOM. In this FOM described at the time what it will do over the next few years to ensure, wherever possible, that its fundamental research is made more useful for society. Besides the key objective of being 'top 5 in the world in terms of research quality' NWO now has a second objective: valorisation.

On 6 July, Vincenzo Castaldo and Ernst Jan Vesseur were awarded their PhDs. They are the first to have gained a PhD within the FOM-FEI Industrial Partnership Programme (IPP) 'Microscopy and modification of nano-structures with focused electron and ion beams'. The IPP focuses on microscopes that use electron beams or ion beams instead of visible light. Ultimately, the researchers hope to be able to process materials and render these visible at the scale of a single atom. The programme has been running since 2007 and is being led by Prof. Pieter Kruit of Delft University of Technology.

The Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter has awarded a Young Energy Scientist (YES!) Fellowship to Dr. Süleyman Er. The former FOM PhD student will spend the next four years looking for a new class of solar cell components that can convert sunlight into electricity more efficiently and at a low cost. With a YES! Fellowship, FOM gives young researchers the chance to develop themselves at a top foreign institute in fundamental energy research. "Together with a team of scientists at Harvard University, I am going to screen molecular libraries and select the most promising molecules. Using these candidate molecules, we aim to design innovative structural motifs for the next generation of solar cells" adds Süleyman Er enthusiastically.

The team of chemists and physicists built five different very small molecules to test the electrical conductance (see figure right). With their experiment they demonstrated that fundamentally new possibilities arise if molecules are used as tiny electronic wires. They made three molecules (right) with a linear conjugated structure. These molecules allow electrons to pass through the molecule via a single dominant route. This gave rise to a current if the molecule was subjected to a potential difference. The two other molecules (left) are cross-conjugated: they have a double carbon-oxygen bond symmetrically around the middle. This provides two possible routes for an electron through the molecule: one straight through and one with a diversion via one of the oxygen branches (see figure below).

Dat quantumgedrag is normaal alleen zichtbaar bij veel kleinere systemen zoals enkele atomen of moleculen. Voormalig FOM-oio dr.
Physicists have demonstrated a system in which light can be converted into a mechanical vibration and vice versa. The interaction is so strong that the movement of an object visible to the naked eye can be controlled at the level where quantum mechanics determines the behaviour of the object. Such quantum behaviour is normally only visible in far smaller systems the size of a few atoms or molecules. Former FOM PhD Dr. Ewold Verhagen is part of the team of researchers from the Swiss EPFL that published the results this week in the journal Nature.
  Doorzichtig goud ontraf...
Making a grating of miniscule holes in an opaque layer of gold dramatically changes its optical properties: the gold is no longer gold-coloured and becomes far more transparent. This is also a fascinating phenomenon for scientists, according to FOM workgroup leader Dr Martin van Exter: “The holes are so small, roughly 500 times thinner than a hair, that you would not expect the gold to become transparent. This implies that the holes in the gold layer 'collaborate ', as a result of which they can transmit more light through the gold. FOM PhD student Frerik van Beijnum and his co-authors have now unravelled exactly how this collaboration works."
The research is part of former FOM PhD Jacco Snoeijer's Vidi project, in which he is studying the movement of fluids across surfaces. The behaviour of fluid drops is not only decisive for everyday phenomena such as condensation and cloud formation. How rapidly individual drops flow together is also important in technological applications. Printer manufacturer Océ and chip machine manufacturer ASML are therefore involved in Snoeijer's project. Océ would like to understand how ink drops flow together, especially on materials where the ink is not absorbed immediately. ASML is interested due to its immersion technology where a thin layer of water serves as an extra lens to make even smaller images still.

Belli's calculations have revealed that impure mixtures of nanobricks with a wide range of dimensions have a surprisingly large tendency to align themselves biaxially. Crystallisation and separation take place far less often in such mixtures. This not only explains the surprising and uncomprehended stability of biaxial arrangements of nanobricks in the experiments of former FOM PhD Esther van der Pol, but also suggests in which direction building blocks can be sought for biaxial molecular liquid crystals with display applications. Or as Belli's supervisor Dr. René van Roij says: "The best alignment usually occurs in the purest materials, but in this case Belli has shown that impurity is fundamentally important for the stability of biaxial liquid crystals".
Researchers from the FOM institutes AMOLF and Rijnhuizen are the first in history to have made a hologram of an atom by using its own electrons. They did this using the unique properties of FELICE, Rijnhuizen's new free electron laser for intracavity experiments. Furthermore, together with an international research team, the researchers have demonstrated that both the electron and the remaining ion are 'stored' in the hologram. This discovery could lead to a new additional technique to unravel processes that take place over an extremely short timescale, and it could also provide insights into important chemical reactions that occur in the world around us. For FOM PhD student Ymkje Huismans this is a superb first publication as principal author: Science published the research results online on 16 December.

Researchers from the FOM Foundation and Eindhoven University of Technology have discovered how a cell feels whether its environment is stiff or soft. It is becoming increasingly evident that such pure physical information – besides the chemical information – can be a decisive factor for the health of stem cells, for example. However up until now how a cell obtained this information was not clear. FOM PhD researcher Liza Novikova demonstrated with calculations and simulations that special protein compounds play a key role in this. Her work will be published on 17 September as a New & Notable article in Biophysical Journal, accompanied by a supporting article from a fellow expert.

Nanotechnologists at the University of Twente's MESA+ research institute – including FOM workgroup leader prof.dr. Detlef Lohse and former FOM PhD Dr. Jacco Snoeijer – have developed a method whereby minuscule polystyrene spheres, automatically and under controlled conditions, form an almost perfect ball that looks suspiciously like a football, but about a thousand times smaller. The spheres organize themselves in such a way that they approach the densest arrangement possible, known as 'closest packing of spheres'. The method provides nanotechnologists with a new way of creating minuscule 3D structures. The research was published 24 September 2012 in the leading scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The yield of solar cells can be vastly improved by reducing energy losses. Before the incident sunlight has managed to generate electricity a large part of that light energy has been lost to heating up the solar cell. Researchers from Technology Foundation STW, NanoNextNL, the University of Amsterdam and Delft University of Technology - including FOM workgroup leaders Prof.dr. Tom Gregorkiewicz and Prof.dr Laurens Siebbeles and former FOM PhD Dr. Tuan Trinh – have found a possible solution to this problem. They have obtained experimental insights into a quantum process in silicon nanocrystals that transfers excess energy from light to adjacent crystals so that energy loss in the form of heat is avoided. This mechanism has only recently been proposed. The researchers' measurements reveal that in practice the mechanism behaves just as the theory predicts. This opens up the way to solar cells with a considerably higher yield than the 25 percent currently achieved in practice. The researchers published their findings on 18 March in an Advance Online Publication on the website of Nature Photonics.
