The project investigated the temporal development of social selectivity in access to tertiary education. As a follow-up study on the MZES-project ‘Social Selectivity in Tertiary Education and Labour Market and Stratification Outcomes’ it focused on the specific role of the central branching point on the way to tertiary education in Germany: the upper secondary degree. In the aftermath of the 1960s, political reforms led to a diversification of institutional pathways to the upper secondary degree. This diversification process was intended to open new possibilities to access higher education for students of underprivileged background. The aim of the project was to conduct the first large scale assessment of the contribution of this institutional diversification process for reducing social inequalities in access to higher education. A special methodological emphasis of the project was devoted to the utilization of official statistics and developing new ways of combining them with survey data.The results of the project reveal that the institutional differentiation of the upper secondary degree, particularly the new pathways in vocational upper secondary education that emerged in the 1970s, attracted more students from less privileged social background and thus contributed to decreasing social selectivity in access to the upper secondary degree. However, the students that attend vocational upper secondary institutions show particularly low transition rates into tertiary education. Hence, the overall conclusion of the project is that the reforms and diversification processes in upper secondary education have been ineffective in reducing social inequalities in access to tertiary education on a large scale.

After the dissident protests began, he returned to Syria along with other PYD members. The day after his arrival, he took part in a PYD rally in al-Qamishli. In a conversation with KURDWATCH, Salih Muslim Muhammad speaks out about the PYD's role within the Syrian revolution and about its activities in Syria.

Thanks to a gift of Maja Sacher-Stehlin, in cooperation with the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation and the Christoph Merian Foundation, the Museum für Gegenwartskunst was established in a converted factory at St. Alban-Rheinweg in 1980, becoming the Kunstmuseum's gallery for contemporary art. In 2003, by way of the Laurenz Foundation, Maja Sacher's granddaughter, Maja Oeri, built the Schaulager for those works of the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation that are not on show at the Kunstmuseum or Museum für Gegenwartskunst. In 1999 Maja Oeri gifted the former Swiss National Bank building (adjacent to the Kunstmuseum at St. Alban-Graben) to the City of Basel, to enable the expansion of the Öffentliche Kunstsammlung and the Department of Art History of the university. By moving the library, the administrative offices and the Department of Art History out of the main building, the Kunstmuseum has gained the new exhibition space and visitor-friendly areas that allow it to keep pace with the challenges of a new museum landscape.

Il progetto fotografico, partito nella primavera del 2008, verte su tre tematiche: le nuove generazioni immigrate in Italia, la condizione del lavoro e "Album di famiglia". Le persone e i luoghi fotografati comprendono scuole, cantieri, ospedali, attività lavorative, luoghi di culto, mense per i poveri, abitazioni, dormitori, gruppi di famiglia. Quest' ultima sezione si è ampliata notevolmente in itinere, mentre la mostra toccava vari luoghi espositivi. "Album di famiglia" è il tentativo di presentare immagini di migranti e nativi tramite le fotografie conservate per anni dalle persone e che spesso raffigurano i luoghi e le famiglie di origine. Ci proponiamo di fare conoscere la società italiana contemporanea, nella sua fase di profondo cambiamento, con realtà multietniche e multiculturali sempre più presenti. "La vita degli altri" è testimonianza, è esperienza, è racconto figurato, è il complesso vissuto dei migranti. Una foto diventa occasione per riflettere, trasportati da un' emozione, dall'espressione di un volto, dalla descrizione di un luogo. Donne, uomini e bambini portatori di strategie, aspettative e progetti di vita. La mostra ha toccato diversi luoghi: dopo la Festa nazionale del lavoro del primo maggio 2008 ai giardini di Ravenna, è stata ospitata al Festival delle Culture di Ravenna, nelle sale del Comune di Faenza, al Centro per gli Studi Costituzionali, le Culture, i Diritti e le Democrazie della Università di Bologna (sede di Ravenna), al Palazzo Bentivoglio di Gualtieri (Reggio Emilia), nelle sale di Porta Palio a Verona, alla Casa delle Culture del Mondo di Milano, alla Assemblea Legislativa della Regione Emilia-Romagna a Bologna.
